Jazz Appreciation Month culminates Saturday, on International Jazz Day, with a citywide buffet of sounds for every appetite, from swinging to avant-garde.

The fifth annual Center City Jazz Festival, founded by trombonist Ernest Stuart, packs 20 acts into five Center City venues over the course of six hours. But that's not all: Smack dab in the middle of the Center City Jazz Festival is the All-City Jazz Festival, featuring some of the city's best young players. In the twilight hours, bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma hosts his second Outsiders Improvised & Creative Music Festival, with 10 rapid-fire sets lasting late into the night (and early morning).

Add the usual Saturday night jazz offerings, and the choices can get dizzying. The packed schedule entails some hard choices, but with a combination of power walking, Uber, and ingenuity, you can make a day of it. We're here to help. Starting in Northern Liberties and ending in Center City as Chelsea Reed wraps up her set at 11:30 p.m., here's how to spend 12 hours listening to jazz in Philadelphia.

11:30 a.m. Behn Gillece & Chris Simonini at Heritage

Start the day with brunch in Northern Liberties, with live music by vibraphonist Gillece and pianist/organist Simonini. Fill up on the "modern rustic" offerings for brunch. You'll need your strength to navigate the Center City Jazz Festival.

1 p.m. The Kimmel Center's Creative Music Program at Franky Bradley's

Begin your Center City fest experience with a glimpse of the city's jazz future. The Kimmel's student music ensemble is directed by local bass powerhouse Anthony Tidd (The Roots, Steve Coleman).

1:30 p.m. Ryan Keberle and Catharsis at MilkBoy

Skip out a bit early to catch trombonist/composer Keberle's infectious ensemble, which draws equally from modern jazz, Keberle's experiences touring with pop acts from Sufjan Stevens to Justin Timberlake, and a range of Latin influences. Features Chilean vocalist Camila Meza.

2:30 p.m. Nasir Dickerson at Fergie's Pub

In the mood for something a bit more traditional? Hop over to Fergie's Pub for Dickerson, a saxophonist and educator in the Coltrane/Parker mold.

3 p.m. All-City Jazz Festival at Temple Performing Arts Center

Take a break from the Center City fest to catch more of Philadelphia's best young players under the direction of trumpet great (and Temple chair of Instrumental Studies) Terell Stafford. The free two-hour performance features jazz combos from seven local high schools and an All-Star Band selected from the district's most talented musicians. You won't be able to stay long, though, if you want to make . . .

4 p.m. Ideal Bread w/ Dave Ballou at Fergie's Pub

Bass clarinetist Josh Sinton leads this irreverent band that takes on the inventive compositions of Steve Lacy, joined for this performance by trumpet virtuoso Dave Ballou.

5:30 p.m. Orrin Evans & Captain Black Big Band at Franky Bradley's

Things get especially tough as the fest draws to a close, so catch the first half of Philly pianist Evans' always-raucous big band, and if you can tear yourself away, skip over to . . .

6 p.m. Gretchen Parlato & Taylor Eigsti at MilkBoy

A drastic shift from the boisterous Captain Black, Parlato is a sinuous and evanescent vocalist, joined for a sure-to-be-captivating set by Grammy-nominated pianist Eigsti.

6:15 p.m. Brandee Younger at Time Restaurant

If you can, wrap up the CC fest with a few minutes of the rising-star harpist, a unique voice in the jazz realm.

7 p.m. Outsiders Improvised & Creative Music Festival, Philadelphia Clef Club

Don't be late for the beginning of the day's second festival, which kicks off with the highlight of the day: a quartet set featuring Downtown New York icon and eclectic composer John Zorn making a rare appearance in a quartet with Philly sax giant Odean Pope, drummer Abe Speller, and Outsiders Fest curator Jamaaladeen Tacuma on bass. You might as well stay put for a few hours, as that 30-minute set will be followed by appearances by guitarist Elliott Sharp, pianist Dave Burrell in an unusual three-keyboard combo with Farid Barron and Raymond King, and bassist Henry Grimes playing with Tacuma and young innovators James Brandon Lewis (sax) and Justin Faulkner (drums), wrapping up about 1 a.m.

9 p.m. Stan Slotter at Paris Wine Bar

If Tacuma's festival gets a little too outside for your tastes, unwind with a few glasses or small bites at London Grill's wine bar and prolific Philadelphia trumpeter Slotter.

10 p.m. Chelsea Reed &Fair Weather Five at Chris' Jazz Café

Venture even further back into the tradition with the swing-era sounds of this young band led by engaging vocalist Reed, which should be warmed up for the second of two sets to round out the day.
