1 - Howard signed with the Rapids before his season at Everton ended. He will officially join Colorado's squad after the Copa América Centenario.

The highest-ranking Union player is Maurice Edu at No. 32.

The highest-paid player who is not a Designated Player is Portland's Fanendo Adi ($640,000 / $712,500). His salary was paid down with the “Targeted Allocation Money” program that was introduced by MLS earlier last year. It allows teams to pay down DP cap hits to sign more big names.

There are multiple age-based salary tiers for Designated Players. When counting the number of non-DPs who make more than a DP salary, I use the senior-level threshhold of $457,500, because it's just easier to explain things that way.

A total of 55 players earn more than the senior-level Designated Player threshhold in base salary; 12 are not DPs, thanks to TAM and other ways MLS teams can fudge the books.

Leaguewide figures

With changes from the last round of data.

Overall expenditure: $160,421,335.57 / $175,059,659.15 (+$8,654,191.61 / +$7,489,916.12)

Total players: 555 (-19)

Mean (average) salary: $290,245.66 / $316,768.32 (+$25,842.97 / +$24,834.97)
Median (middle) salary: $107,887.50 / $116,833.34 (+$7,887.50 / +$4,833.33)
Mode (most common) salary: $63,000.00 / $63,000.00 (+$3,000 / +$3,000)

Minimum salary: $51,492.00 / $51,492.00 (+$1,492.00 / $1,492.00)

Officially, just one player makes the minimum salary: Montréal Impact forward Michael Salazar. In reality, the minimum salary by league rule is $51,500 (as the base and guaranteed figure). Give or take a few cents for taxes and exchange rates, 36 players are at that pay grade. Nineteen of the 20 teams in MLS have at least one such player on their roster. Dallas, New England and Philadelphia have the most such players with three each.

As always, I save the end of these posts for players who often get overlooked.

League-wide goalkeeper pool

Trey Mitchell: $62,500.00 / $62,500.00 $50,000.04 / $50,000.04

Mitchell remains the only player in the pool. He received a $12,500 raise from last year. Union fans might remember that he was summoned to back up Brian Sylvestre for a game at Vancouver last May when Andre Blake and John McCarthy were injured.

Unsigned players

D Dan Gargan: ($145,000.00 / $145,000.00)

M Sanna Nyassi: ($135,000.00 / $141,250.00)
M Adolfo Ovalle: ($63,000.00 / $73,500.00)
M Cristian Martinez: ($62,508.00 / $67,008.00)

F Luke Moore: ($115,000.00 / $137,500.00)
F Schillo Tshuma: ($81,999.96 / $119,999.96)

Gargan, a Philadelphia native, was most recently with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He and Moore, most recently with Toronto FC, were waived at the end of February.

Ovalle was most recently with Real Salt Lake's USL team; he was waived at the end of April.

Nyassi was most recently with the San Jose Earthquakes.

Tshuma's last MLS stop was Portland, the team that drafted him last year; he currently plays for the USL's Saint Louis FC.

Martinez was officially included among the unsigned pool, but he shouldn't have been. He joined the Columbus Crew on Tuesday.

Toward the end of last season, I made some charts showing historical changes in MLS salary data. Here are updated versions that include this year's new numbers.
