Maurice Edu out of Union vs. Kansas City due to concussion

Union midfielder Maurice Edu won't play in Wednesday night's game at Sporting Kansas City (8:30 p.m., Comcast SportsNet) because of concussion symptoms.

The injury occurred in the 70th minute of Saturday's 1-0 loss to D.C. United. Edu went up for a ball in the air with D.C.'s Chris Korb, and Korb's head swung backward into Edu's.

Edu trained Tuesday, but given his stakes with the United States national team, the Union decided to pull him out of Wednesday's game out as a precaution.

As a result, Edu left Kansas City to join Jurgen Klinsmann's squad for the first day of its pre-World Cup training camp at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

In fact, Edu was the first national team player to arrive at camp. The U.S. Soccer Federation announced it on Twitter:

Unfortunately, a mix-up in communications meant that Edu's arrival at Stanford was confirmed before his departure from the Union was made public.

When John Hackworth spoke with reporters in a conference call on Tuesday, the only injury he mentioned as being of any consequence was Brian Carroll's pulled groin muscle, which forced the team's captain off the field at halftime of Saturday's loss to D.C. United.

Even Sporting Kansas City itself appeared to have been surprised by Edu's the news, judging by the team's official Twitter feed:

At least now everything is cleared up. Concussions certainly aren't something to be taken lightly, and I would never fault a team for being overly cautious with them.

With Edu having arrived at Stanford, three MLS players are still with their club teams: Toronto FC's Michael Bradley and Kansas City's Matt Besler and Graham Zusi. They all have games Wednesday night.

Bradley is in Vancouver for TFC's Voyageurs Cup (Canada's equivalent of the U.S. Open Cup) semifinal second leg against the Whitecaps. Besler and Zusi will be playing against the Union.
