Weekend roundup: Costa Rica wins CONCACAF Copa Centroamericana

Costa Rica entered the CONCACAF Copa Centroamericana as the favorite to win the title, and did just that in the end. But it was quite a wild ride along the way.

In the group stage, the Ticos had to sit out of the last matchday and hope that Panama wouldn't match their goal difference. After surviving that scare, they gave up the first goal in the final to - who else? - Guatemala's Carlos Ruiz. But Costa Rica rallied, going in front with spectacular goals by Bryan Ruiz and Juan Bustos.

That almost still wasn't enough. After Costa Rica went up, Carlos Ruiz hit the ball into the net with a spectacular bicycle kick. But for the umpteenth time on the night, he was offisde. The Ticos held on from there.

It was Costa Rica's eighth title in the many-named history of CONCACAF's cup for Central American nations. The victory also gave the Ticos one of CONCACAF's six berths in the Copa América Centenario, a combined tournament for teams from South, Central and North America that will be played in 2016.

The other five teams will be the United States, Mexico, the winner of this year's CONCACAF Caribbean Cup, and the top two teams in the 2015 Gold Cup that haven't already qualified.

Here are the video highlights from Costa Rica's win, as well as the other two Copa Centroamericana placement games. In the third place game, Panama beat El Salvador, and in the fifth-place game, Honduras beat Nicaragua.

The top four finishers earned automatic berths in the 2015 Gold Cup. Honduras earned a place in a playoff against the fifth-place finisher in the Caribbean Cup. It would be quite something if los Catrachos, who played in this summer's World Cup, failed to qualify for the Gold Cup. They have already come perilously close to missing out.
