2016 Major League Soccer and National Women's Soccer League national television schedule

Major League Soccer's 2016 national television schedule is once again packed with big games spread across ESPN, Fox and Univision networks.

The Twitter handle above is for my general news reporting. My soccer handle is @thegoalkeeper. Contact me there for any questions about this post.

Major League Soccer's 2016 national television schedule is once again packed with big games spread across ESPN, Fox and Univision networks.

The highlight is a return to coverage on an over-the-air English-language channel, as Fox airs seven games on its broadcast channel - including the MLS Cup final. ESPN also has five games in time slots adjacent to its mid-summer coverage of the European Championships.

On the Spanish side, UniMás increases the number of games it is airing in its popular Friday night window. Univision's sports cable channel, Univision Deportes, simulcasts many of those games to help get them into markets without UniMás affiliates. UDN also broadcasts a Sunday night highlights show.

Univision's games are broadcast not just in Spanish, but also in English via the SAP feed on your TV. They are streamed in both languages via Univision's website, free of charge with authentication through participating cable providers.

For the second straight season, the national TV networks have flex scheduling opportunities in the last two weeks of the campaign. There are also simultaneous kickoffs in both rounds. In Week 33, the games are split by conference, and in Week 34 all 20 teams leaguewide play at the same time.

Here is the breakdown of games by channel:

Fox: 7
ESPN: 35
Fox Sports 1: 35
ESPN2: 5
Univision: 1
UniMás: 31
Univision Deportes: 1

Fox Deportes has Spanish-language coverage of most games on Fox and Fox Sports 1. ESPN Deportes has Spanish-language coverage of most games on ESPN and ESPN2. Both networks stream their respective games through their authenticated platforms, WatchESPN and Fox Sports Go.

In addition to its regular season coverage, ESPN also has the All-Star Game on July 28. Fox Sports 1 has the MLS Cup final at the end of the year. The playoff schedule will be confirmed closer to that time.

National TV rights in Canada are held by Bell Media, which airs games on TSN in English and RDS in French. TSN carries every Vancouver Whitecaps game, as well as many Toronto FC and Montréal Impact games.

The remaining Toronto FC games air on Rogers' Sportsnet channels. The remaining Impact games are aired on Québecor's TVA Sports, in French only.

All of the Canadian networks stream their games through their respective authenticated streaming platforms.

Here is the full slate for the year. Union games are in bold. As of now, they make just three U.S. national TV appearances: two on UniMás and one on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes. The team is not scheduled to appear on ESPN networks at all this season.

Click here to jump to the Canadian national TV schedule.

I have also included National Women's Soccer League games, U.S. men's and women's national team games, CONCACAF Champions League games, Copa América Centenario and European Championship games and Olympics games that set up featured coverage windows on North American TV networks.

Most times listed below are when broadcast windows begin. Actual kickoff times for nationally-televised MLS and U.S. national team games vary. Here's a quick explanation:

Univision networks and Canadian networks: Usually seven or eight minutes after the broadcast starts, since their coverage windows are almost always two hours.

Fox networks: Usually 15 to 17 minutes after the broadcast starts, since their coverage windows are almost always two and a half hours. The games on Fox's over-the-air network are expected to have half-hour pregame shows, so expect kickoffs closer to the top or bottom of the hour depending on when the broadcast starts.

ESPN networks: Times vary depending on whether a given broadcast window includes a half-hour pregame show. Not all do. If there is one, expect the kickoff to be after that. If there isn't one, expect the kickoff at seven to eight minutes after the broadcast starts.

For the non-MLS games in here, the times listed are kickoff times. That's because pregame coverage is counted separately, and length of pregame coverage varies by competition.

I realize that's a bit confusing. But for the most part, the times below are close enough. Check your local listings. If you get confused, you can ask me on Twitter and I'll usually have a quick answer.

* - These games are asterisked because while they are televised on Fox, they aren't televised to the entire country. Because of the network's NFL commitments, you get whichever game is opposite the NFL broadcast carried by your local Fox network.

For example: if you get a 1 p.m. ET NFL game (as is the case across the east coast), you'll see Toronto-New York. If you get a 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT NFL game (as is the case in Los Angeles and Seattle), you'll see Kansas City-L.A. You can watch the other game online via Fox Sports Go, or on TV in Spanish.
