WWE Smackdown Live results and observations (8/1/17): Shinsuke Nakamura is headed to SummerSlam

The slump Smackdown Live endured during the month of July now seems like a distant memory, as Tuesday night was yet another example that blue brand had gotten back on track.

Granted, it took a dream match to help bring Smackdown Live out of its summer malaise, but by hook or by crook, the blue brand returned to form with another quality show this week.

Before I get into my full analysis, here are the full match results from the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

- WWE United States championship – AJ Styles def. Kevin Owens

- Aiden English def. Sami Zayn

- Naomi & Becky Lynch def. Natalya & Carmella

- Rusev def. Chad Gable

- Shinsuke Nakamura def. John Cena

Nakamura is headed to SummerSlam

Nakamura and Cena had a lot to live up to, as WWE touted their bout Tuesday night as a dream match.

That was not false advertising either. That was true. Two years ago, fans could only dream up a scenario that had Nakamura and Cena share the same ring for a one-on-one match.

A lot of those dreams probably had the match taking place on pay-per-view, but our dreams don't always fully come to fruition.

Despite having fantastical expectations to meet, Cena and Nakamura lived up to them with a stellar match on Smackdown Live. The only thing I saw as a negative was that there was a commercial break during the match.

I understand that WWE has bills to pay, but it could have at least given fans the picture-in-picture feature. Instead, fans watching on television missed a good chunk of the match.

With that said, what the fans were able to see was captivating. Everything from the game of one-upsmanship early in the match to its unbelievable conclusion worked.

Speaking of that ending, how crazy was that? It was so crazy that fans were not talking about the fact that Nakamura handed Cena a rare clean defeat on television.

They were more concerned with Cena's well being after he was dropped right on the back of his neck before taking the Kinshasa from Nakamura.

They were a few tense moments before Nakamura landed the Kinshasa, as I wondered if Cena was going to be able to even stand on his feet after taking such a nasty fall.

However, he not only stood up to take the move, he was able to shake Nakamura's hand and raise it in the air in a sign of respect after the match. If anything, Cena looked unfazed.

Cena did even more with Baron Corbin after the match, but we'll get into that in a second.

But I'd be remiss if didn't analyze the significance of Nakamura's victory Tuesday night. Not only did he defeat Cena, which very few people on the WWE roster can say they have done, he also secured a WWE championship at the company's second-biggest event of the year.

Again, two years ago, Nakamura even being in WWE would have been mind-boggling, but in 2017, not only is it a reality, but he could walk out of SummerSlam as the WWE champion.

Baron Corbin-Cena feud in the works?

As I mentioned earlier, Cena was not done with physicality after taking that awful fall during his match against Nakamura.

That was because Corbin ran down to the ring and attacked both Cena and Nakamura. Corbin attempted to slam Cena through the announce table, but Cena countered by getting Corbin up on his shoulders — remember, this is after nearly breaking his neck at the end of his match with Nakamura — and sending him through the table via the attitude adjustment.

This segment, which aired exclusively on the WWE Network, not only proved that Cena is a human being unlike anything we have ever seen before, but it also hinted at a possible feud between Cena and Corbin for SummerSlam.

Since Cena has nothing else to do and Corbin has nothing else to do besides carry around a bright blue briefcase wherever he goes, it only makes sense.

Styles-Owens feud will never end

While the Cena-Corbin feud is seemingly just beginning the one between Styles and Owens apparently has no end.

Although Styles defeated Owens to retain his United States championship Tuesday night, it occurred in controversial fashion, as Owens' shoulders were not on the mat.

The referee was out of position after receiving a phantom punch to the face from Owens, and could not see Owens' shoulder come off the mat.

Owens was rightfully furious about all of this and demanded Smackdown Live commissioner Shane McMahon and general manager Daniel Bryan do something about it.

McMahon attempted to resolve the issue by giving Owens another chance at Styles and the United States title at SummerSlam, but that was not good enough for Owens.

He wanted to make sure the match was officiated by someone he deemed competent. Bryan quickly rectified that issue by appointing McMahon to referee the match.

Owens showcased his satisfaction with Bryan's decision by flipping over a wooden table.

I know some may roll their eyes at the prospect of seeing Styles against Owens yet again, especially after Tuesday's odd finish, but at least the match this week was darn good.

In fact, I'd call it the best they have had since they began feuding over the United States championship.

And adding McMahon gives the match some much-needed intrigue.

Many RKOs on the horizon for Rusev

If I were a fortune teller and Rusev was my customer, I would tell him that I see many RKOs in his future, as he is slated to face Randy Orton at SummerSlam.

Rusev found himself in the match after defeating Gable in a fantastic contest that showcased the talent of both men involved.

Rusev took the microphone after the match and said that he has no opponent for SummerSlam because everyone was afraid of him.

I guess the only person that did not fear Rusev was Orton, who walked out and challenged Rusev to a match at SummerSlam.

Rusev responded by attempting a sneak attack on Orton, but Orton predictably countered into an RKO. I am sure we will see that scenario play out many times over the next couple of weeks.

Regardless, I am glad WWE found something for Rusev to do for a show of this magnitude.

Fashion Peaks

I know this might disappoint some people, but I have never gotten into Twin Peaks.

I am aware of the show's popularity and I am familiar with David Lynch's work, including Twin Peaks: Fire Walks with Me, but I have never sat down and watched the series, so forgive me if I did not get all of the references to the show Breezango and the Ascension made during the Fashion Peaks segment on Smackdown Live.

Judging by the reaction of Twin Peaks fans, the segment was a rousing success.

I did like the board, which featured a bunch of nods to not only Twin Peaks, but also Lynch's other films such as Eraserhead and Blue Velvet.

Sting was mocked for being Eraserhead and there was photo of "Blue Velvet McIntyre."

That is clever stuff once again from the Tyler Breeze and Fandango.
