WWE Monday Night results and observations (06/20/16): The battlefield has been set

WWE usually enters a bit of a lull period after WrestleMania.

It usually doesn't snap out of it until it is time to buildup the company's second-biggest event, SummerSlam.

But that has changed this year. WWE's last three pay-per-view outings have been some of the its best all year and the episodes of Monday Night Raw have been consistently good. Sure, there are still few duds here and there, but for the most part, Raw has not been mind-numbingly bad like it has during the three-hour era.

This past Monday night was yet another good episode and set the stage for some potentially major things to come for this summer.

Before I dig into anymore details from the show, here are the full match results Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix:

- Sami Zayn def. Kevin Owens

- Enzo Amore & Big Cass def. The Vaudevillains

- John Cena def. Karl Anderson via disqualification

- Baron Corbin def. Zack Ryder

- WWE Women's championship – Charlotte def. Paige

- Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins ended in a double count-out

The Shield will collide at Battleground

The match that we have all been waiting for is finally going to happen.

Ever since The Shield broke up two years ago, fans have wondered what a triple threat match would like between its members — Rollins, Reigns and Dean Ambrose. We're finally going to get an answer, as the three men will vie for the WWE World Heavyweight championship at Battleground after Shane McMahon officially made the match Monday night.

While fans are rejoicing about finally being able to see a match that has been two years in the making, some were also disappointed in the fact that the match is taking place at a secondary — and usually forgettable — pay-per-view like Battleground and not the company's biggest event of the summer, SummerSlam.

I agree with those fans. This match should be taking place at SummerSlam. Hey, it is even worthy of being the main event of WrestleMania.

However, there is a little thing called logistics getting in the way of that happening. To be more specific, it is the impending splitting of the brands and the draft that is set to take place merely days before Battleground.

It is highly unlikely that all three of these men will wind up on the same brand, meaning that it would be silly to have these men take part in a cross-promotional match just a month or so after establishing distinctive rosters.

What I am really trying to say is that the match has to happen at Battleground, for better or for worse.

Yes, this a match that could make a lot of money in a much larger stage than Battleground, but the draft prevents that.

Also, it gives everyone a reason to look forward to watch Battleground, which is a very new feeling for me, to be quite frank. This is easily the biggest match in the brief and uneventful history of Battleground.

But look on the bright side. It's still happening, which is the most important part in all of this at the end of the day.

As far as Monday, everything pretty much went as most expected. Ambrose is a wild and crazy WWE World Heavyweight champion, both Rollins and Reigns are due rematches, so they will receive them at the same time in a triple threat.

There was a rematch between Rollins and Reigns that was made moot by the time Shane McMahon made the Battleground match, but it was good while it lasted.

AJ Styles is very good at what he does

It seems as though that Styles has finally hit his stride as a character in WWE. He has always had his stride as a wrestler in the ring, but he is seems as comfortable as ever playing the role of a heel.

His promo with Cena Monday night was evidence of this. As a matter of fact, The Club as a whole did a great job Monday. Let's not forget about Cena. (It would be un-American to forget about Cena) He did some quality work as well.

The apology promo was really funny from The Club and the ensuing beat down on Cena only helped the group garner more heat, which is its job at the end of the day whether we think that's the right decision or not.

Some people are going to be really upset when Cena eventually tears through The Club and I get it to a certain extent, but we all know how Cena storylines and babyface storylines in general usually play out. I'd be shocked if WWE suddenly changed its modus operandi with this story.

The Boss is back

After weeks and weeks of being left off Raw for whatever reason, Sasha Banks finally returned Monday Night. And she went right after the current WWE Women's champion Charlotte.

Yes, I know. This sounds a lot like what she did at the Royal Rumble, but maybe Banks actually wins the title this time instead of inexplicably losing like she did at WrestleMania. By the way, I don't she has lost a singles match since being called up the main roster a year ago.

Regardless, it is oh so good to have Banks back in the fold. I have been saying this for a while, but she is one of the best performers in the world, male or female. I think the fans in Phoenix agreed as they erupted when her music hit.

Now that she is back in the fold, it is now incumbent upon WWE to turn her loose. The women's division has been awful lately and is in desperate need of Banks and Charlotte setting it on fire again.

The time is now, WWE.

The buzzards are back, too

Also returning Monday night was The Wyatt Family.

Bray Wyatt and his friends (mostly Bray Wyatt) received a hero's welcome, but The New Day cut the return party short.

This was a good segment, but a couple of odd things happened. Firstly, The New Day and The Wyatt Family are sort of an odd pairing.

They are obviously polar opposites, but I'm not sure The Wyatt Family being the butt of The New Day's jokes helps the former all the much, especially since they are such dark and ominous characters.

Secondly, Kofi Kingston apparently says whatever he wants on television these days. My jaw hit the floor when he said what he had said. I'm only putting it that way because this is a family web site.

Also, what in the world happened to Xavier Woods? Was he hypnotized? Are we really going to make Wyatt a supernatural character again? Has he now gained the ability to hypnotize people by just gazing longingly into someone else's eyes?

That just seemed odd and I can see it being a major part of their story moving forward, which could either be really good or really, really bad.
