WWE Cruiserweight Classic results and observations (08/17/16)

After producing one of the best matches of 2016 last week, the WWE Cruiserweight Classic faced a tall task in following it up with more great action, as the second round continued with a trio of contests Wednesday night.

Leading off the tripleheader was Japan's Akira Tozawa going up against technical wizard Jack Gallagher of England.

Gallagher showed off some of his technical prowess in the early stages of the match by managing to tie Tozawa up in a ball. Tozawa only escaped when Gallagher delivered a swift kick to his rear end.

From there, Gallagher worked on Tozawa's leg with some painful looking submission maneuvers with some charisma sprinkled in.

Tozawa took offense to Gallagher's antics and eventually managed to defeat the British grappler with a snap German suplex followed up by a dead lift German suplex.

With the surprising win, Tozawa will move on to face Gran Metalik in the quarterfinals.

After that, it was Scotland's Noam Dar squaring off against the father of wrestling in China, HoHo Lun.

Lun followed up a sub par performance in the first round with a much-improved one in the second. However, it was not enough to defeat Dar, as his constant punishment to Lun's left knee set up a knee bar for the win.

Dar will face either England's Zack Sabre Jr. or Philadelphia's Drew Gulak in the next round.

The main event was a battle between Americans Brian Kendrick and Tony Nese.

Kendrick attempted to run right at Nese at the start of the match, but Nese caught him with a boot right to the face, which helped take initial control.

With Daniel Bryan cheering him on from the commentary booth, Kendrick dug deep in his bag of tricks in order to gain the upper hand and began to work on Nese's left arm.

Nese withstood the punishment and almost landed the 450-splash for the win, but Kendrick moved out of the way just in time and immediately locked on a chokehold, which forced Nese to submit.

Kendrick will face Kota Ibushi in the round of eight.

Here are the full match results:
