Seth Rollins out 6-9 months with knee injury; Forced to relinquish WWE World Heavyweight title

WWE has been struck with the injury bug on multiple occasions in 2015, but the latest injury news probably has the biggest impact on the company moving forward.

WWE announced Thursday that WWE World Heavyweight champion Seth Rollins will be out of action six to nine months after suffering a torn ACL, MCL and medial meniscus Wednesday in a match during a live event in Dublin, Ireland.

The injury will cause him to relinquish the WWE World Heavyweight title immediately. In order to crown a new champion, WWE announced that a one-night tournament would be held at Survivor Series Nov. 22. WWE did not announce any details as to who or how many competitors would take part in the tournament.

Rollins was scheduled to defend the WWE World Heavyweight championship against current No. 1 contender Roman Reigns, who earned that spot back on the Oct. 25 edition of Monday Night Raw.

Rollins has held the title since March 29, when he became the first man to ever cash in his Money in the Bank contract at WrestleMania. His reign lasted 221 days; three day shy of the man he took the title from, Brock Lesnar.

WWE has been hampered by injuries throughout 2015 with notable names such as Daniel Bryan, Ryback, Rusev, Tyson Kidd and Jey Uso all missing time due to injury. Most recently, Randy Orton was sidelined four to six months after suffering a dislocated shoulder.

Rollins' injury leaves a massive hole to fill for WWE, as he was the focal point of television storylines during his title run and was expected to participate in a marquee match at WrestleMania next April.
