Walnut Street is focus of new Cooking Channel show

"Chuck's Eat The Street," premiering Oct. 6, showcases four Philly spots.

Canadian chef Chuck Hughes' new Cooking Channel show, Chuck's Eat The Street, visits distinctive food streets in America, such as Beale Street in Memphis, Mission Street in San Francisco, and Magazine Street in New Orleans.

For its premiere on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 8:30 p.m., Hughes hits our town's Walnut Street to eat Pickled Watermelon and Poutine topped with Fried Eggs at Square Peg, veggie and traditional Meatballs at Marabella Meatball Co., followed by a stop at Zahav for a Hanger Steak on a bed of baba ghanoush (OK, so you can see Walnut Street from the window). The it's off to Capogiro for gelato.

interesting choice of streets. In the 1990s and '00s, Walnut Street was restaurant row - OK, I 'm not even thinking about Old Original Bookbinders here - with spots such as Striped Bass, Circa, Brasserie Perrier, Susanna Foo, and Le Bec-Fin back when it had a hyphen and a Frenchman in the kitchen.

Thanks primarily to lower rents, the action nowadays has shifted squarely to Sansom Street.
