Studio Movie Grill to open in Upper Darby

Nine screens and food, down the block from the Tower Theater.

Upper Darby is getting a Studio Movie Grill, part of the Dallas-based dine-in movie theater chain, this summer.

Movie theaters with bars and waiter service are a thing now. Movie Tavern, which operates one in Providence Town Center near Collegeville, is opening a branch this summer in Flourtown and just broke ground for another in Main Street at Exton. The AMC Painter's Crossing 9 in the Brandywine Valley was retrofitted into one last year.

The local Studio Movie Grill, with nine screens and 3-D capability, is pegged for a late-July opening at 53 S. 69th St. - just down the block from the Tower Theater and a quick walk from the 69th Street SEPTA station. American menu, full bar.

It's the former United Artists 69th Street, which in a twist had a food court.
