Cosi closes some local cafes amid bankruptcy

Late Tuesday, a witness reported that a moving van carted away equipment from the Bryn Mawr store.

Six of the region's Cosi bakery-cafes closed abruptly on Tuesday on the eve of a filing Wednesday for bankruptcy protection by the Boston-based corporation.

The company, whose stock has sunk by nearly 69 percent in the last year, announced that 29 of 74 locations nationwide were closed. It is seeking to reorganize under Chapter 11.

The company did not provide a list of the closings and did not reply to messages seeking comment.

Cosi locations at 12th and Walnut Streets and at 15th and Locust Streets in Center City Philadelphia were closed overnight. Late Tuesday, a witness reported that the Cosi location at 763 W. Lancaster Ave. in Bryn Mawr was shuttered. Employees were ordered out, remaining food was tossed into the garbage, and a moving van carted away equipment.

The phone rang unanswered Wednesday at locations in Newtown, Berwyn, and Mount Laurel, while it was business as usual at the locations at Fourth and Chestnut Streets and 17th and Market Streets in Center City Philadelphia, at Temple University, at the University of Pennsylvania, at 30th Street Station, and in Elkins Park, Exton, and Concordville.
