She spent the day with Jose Garces

As a home cook, Aliah Davis saw a great opportunity when Verizon Wireless announced a sweepstakes whose prize was cooking with Jose Garces.

"I mean, I'm pretty good, but not Iron Chef-level," said Davis, a marketing/PR pro from Washington in Warren County, N.J.

She and her guest (her husband, Brian) spent five hours with Garces on Friday, Nov. 9. They started at the Verizon store at 11th and Market Streets, where he signed copies of his cookbook, The Latin Road Home.

Then it was off to JG Domestic, his restaurant at the Cira Centre. Davis says they toured his offices behind the restaurant and then got down to cooking - making Ecaudorian-style shrimp ceviche and chicken and rice soup - which they ate.

"I'm always looking for new recipes and techniques, so this was great," said Davis, the mother of boys ages 7 and 10.

She also won $1,000 and a 4G LTE tablet from Verizon Wireless.
