Rizzo: I took a fall for mother
The city councilman is mending a broken ankle.
It was fate, City Councilman Frank Rizzo says, that he insisted upon walking ahead of his 93-year-old mother, Carmella, on Christmas Eve while helping her into a car outside his sister's house in Montgomery County.
Rizzo stepped on what he calls a tiny patch of black ice, slid, and caught his foot on dry ground.
Bang.
Broken ankle, which Dr. Susan Harding repaired Christmas Day.
"If I hadn't walked ahead," he said, "she would have taken the fall, and that may have killed her. I'm glad it was me and not her."
Rizzo returned today from his two-week postop checkup and is following doctor's orders to stay off it.
