Restaurant notes: What's that truck doing on Whole Foods' roof?

Tacos al fresco.

"Honest Tom" McCusker and Jose "Guapos Tacos" Garces have taken tacos on the road with their trucks.

The Whole Foods in Plymouth Meeting Mall has gone the truck route, but it's not going anywhere.

Literally, anyway.

The store had a regulation taco truck decorated and then hauled it up on the roof as a set piece in its rooftop cafe dining area. (I'm told that the crane did its hoisting at 4 a.m. to avoid prying eyes.)

The Blue Route Taco Truck starts at noon Friday, April 15. Store employees will make and sell soft-shell tacos, five varieties, off the truck -- one for $2,50, three for $6 -- plus sodas, bottled tea, water, and beer. Opening day will feature a Latin jazz band and giveaways.

Regular hours will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, weather permitting.

Based on an informal sampling, we'll heartily recommend the fish (beer-battered haddock filet with slaw and mayo) and carne asada (with queso fresco, onion, and cilantro). The pork carnitas was tasty, as was the spiced chicken, though both meats were shredded/pulled and seemed indistinguishable. Neither of us tried the vegetable taco.

One negative aspect, which I hope they'll reconsider: No substitutions of ingredients are allowed.
