Percy Street Barbecue to be sold

The South Street BBQ restaurant no longer fit in CookNSolo's portfolio, which includes the nationally known Zahav and Abe Fisher's as well as Federal Donuts and Dizengoff.

A sale is in the works for Percy Street Barbecue, which Steven Cook, Michael Solomonov, and Erin O'Shea opened seven years ago on South Street just west of Ninth.

A new partnership will assume control upon transfer of the liquor license, Cook said. That takes 90 to 120 days typically.

For now, it is business as usual, and it will remain so after the sale, said Jasper Singh, one of three partners buying the place. "We ate there long before we thought of buying it," said Singh, who also owns Restaurant 1861 in Middletown, Del. Singh, who grew up in New York in his family's restaurant business, has long wanted to own a restaurant in Philadelphia because of the scene and its energy.

Cook said Percy Street was sold because it no longer fit in CookNSolo's portfolio, which includes the nationally known Zahav and Abe Fisher's as well as Federal Donuts and Dizengoff. Percy Street briefly had a location in the marketplace below the Comcast Center.

O'Shea will remain with CookNSolo, Cook said.

Cook said he and his partners were further expanding Federal Donuts, which specializes in fancy doughnuts and fried chicken, and Dizengoff, an Israeli-styled hummus shop.

Following our conversation, Cook and Solomonov released this statement: "All of us at CookNSolo are incredibly proud of Percy Street, the restaurant that we have built, tinkered with and always tried to improve upon over the last seven years. None of this would have been possible without the limitless dedication, talent, and grace of chef/partner Erin O'Shea. As the center of gravity of our company changes, we believe that a new ownership group with fresh energy is the best way for Percy Street to continue its mission of being the tried and true barbecue joint that Philadelphians love."
