Opa reopens after 12-day Health Department shutdown

It will extend its restaurant week promotion through Feb. 10.

Four times was the charm for Opa, the Greek bar-restaurant in Washington Square West, which reopened Monday, Jan. 30 after a 12-day Health Department shutdown.

A candy-stripe cease-operations notice was affixed to the front door at 1311 Sansom St. on Jan. 18 after an inspector said she found numerous violations, including mouse droppings and flies. Opa then failed reinspections on Jan. 20, Jan. 23, Jan. 26, and Jan. 30 - closing it during most of Center City District Restaurant Week, which ends Feb. 3.

Opa management said it has extended the restaurant week special through Friday, Feb. 10, including Saturday, Feb. 4. The restaurant week promotion is $20 lunch and $35 dinner.

"These professionals have gone as far to say they'd guess no restaurant is currently as clean as Opa right now, especially after rounds of cleanings and maintenance," they said. "[W]e are all pretty shocked by the outcome, but respect the authority of the health department and will continue to work hard to rectify this situation. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our staff and guests."

Tuesday, George Tsiouris said: "We are looking forward to getting back to business at Opa, and welcoming and serving our loyal guests. We thank them for their patience through this time. And we appreciate the support of our staff, as well as our consultants with whom we worked to resolve this issue."
