Garces wins mid-Atlantic Beard Award

The chef-owner of Amada, Tinto, Distrito and Chifa was the sole Philadelphian to bring home a major prize at the "Oscars" of culinary awards.

Jose Garces (Amada, Tinto, Distrito, Chifa) won as best chef, mid-Atlantic, at the James Beard Awards on Monday night. It was his third consecutive nomination.

All other Philly nominees (Marc Vetri, Stephen Starr, Mike Solomonov, Chip Roman, Jonathan McDonald) were shut out as all of the main restaurant awards -- except for one -- went to New Yorkers and New York restaurants. Mustache Bill's, the diner in Barnegat at the Jersey shore, was named an "America's classic."

The voting is conducted nationwide, but...
