Phillies food lineup: Get yer pastrami, poutine, mussels

They say 2014 will be a rebuilding year for the Phillies.

Same for Aramark, which handles the food at Citizens Bank Park.

For its 11th season at the ballpark, Aramark rebuilt many kitchens. The new equipment will allow for new food options and perhaps add some speed this season.

At least part of the new lineup - to be announced Monday, March 24 - is smokin'.

Kevin Tedesco, Aramark's general manager, and Jeremy Campbell, its director of concessions, seem particularly pumped about the pastrami that's brined and smoked in-house, as well as house-braised and -smoked brisket. "We studied this extensively," Campbell said, clearly relishing the research.

The pastrami sandwich will be done "special" style (topped with Russian dressing and slaw) and served in Alley Brewing Co.'s new, expanded location. The brisket will be included in a grilled cheese sandwich topped with pepper jack cheese on griddled Texas toast.

At Harry the K's, whose renovation includes more high-top tables and drink rails, Aramark also will unveil poutine, the Montreal french fry dish that's topped with a crise cardiaque of richness (gravy, cheese curds and bacon), and Prince Edward Island mussels served in a sauce of shallots, bacon and ale with a grilled baguette. There also will be an offering called an Over Easy Burger (a 5.5-ounce Angus beef burger topped with pepper jelly, oven-dried tomato and a fried egg) and a BLT with slab bacon, chipotle, lettuce, tomato and onion ring.

For dessert, Harry the K's will offer a soft-serve ice cream stand with a create-your-own sundae bar; sundaes and root beer floats will be $5 on Sundays after the fourth inning.

Aramark also is twinning hot dogs and craft bottled beers at a new stand called Philly Frank and Stein. The most ambitious is the Philly Cheese Steak Dog (a frank topped with steak and melted cheese; onions optional); a bacon dog (a frank topped with slab bacon and melted cheese); and a chili cheese dog. Aramark also will revive its Summer Dog from a few seasons ago (a frank topped with cucumbers, pickled onion salsa and ancho pepper sauce).

Prices were not disclosed, in keeping with Aramark's practice.

Pregame, the team is offering a $10 family pack at South Philadelphia Market stands from the time that gates open until first pitch. Choose from a combination of three items (regular popcorn, soft pretzel, hot dog or regular soda) all for $10.

There will be more to come. Tedesco says they're also working on a lobster roll.

In other news: Planet Hoagie will move next to Federal Donuts, which will return for its second season.
