Center City's Krispy Kreme to close
Michael Klein, Philly.com
Sunday, Dec. 30 is the finale for the Center City location of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, which opened only in spring 2011.
Franchisee Brian Zaslow says the location, on 16th Street just north of Chestnut, was "nontraditional. ... It didn't work." He emphasized that this decision had no impact on his franchise group's growth. Back in July, the blog NakedPhilly noted that KK's space was available for sublease, but Zaslow told me at the time not to read into that listing. (This was a full two months before Federal Donuts opened nearby.)
The forthcoming KK location in Manoa Shopping Center in Havertown will use 16th Street's equipment, he said, positioning Center City's closure as a relocation.
Meanwhile, the franchise is selling doughnuts - baked that morning - in Brown's ShopRite supermarkets.
I remember the lines at the store in fox chase when it opened. Now, hardley anyone goes there. teddybear415

I remember it wasn't long ago that there would be crazy drive through lines every time one of the KK franchises opened up. It was supposed to be a major threat for Dunkin Donuts but for some reason it just wasn't sustainable. Sewellmatt
I don't live near that area anymore. I'd would go after their yummy donuts more often. If only I knew, their was a CC branch. Septa, thanks for cutting me off from something naugty but nice. joyceoxfeld1212@hotmail.com
Krispy Kreme donuts are not crispy and they're not creamy. They're really not that good. TeamPhilly
You people who think DDonuts actually has edible, let alone good donuts, just slay me. There is no comparison between KK and DD.....KK is fresh, gooey, sweet while DD is, well, cardboard and sawdust held together by some glue. I don't know what this guy did to run this store into the ground but you'd have to be an idiot to lose at selling KK donuts. Myself and others have been known to drive 100 mi out of our way just to get to a store with fresh, hot KK donuts. And for you people settling on buying your donuts at a supermarket or 7-11, you get what you deserve because even KK donuts are not good in those locations. You gotta get them hot, sweet, dripping in sugar, fresh off the conveyor belt or not at all. The only comparison I can even remember coming close was when I was a little kid in the mid 60's and my grandmother had a job cleaning up at night in a small bakery near 3rd and Poplar and she'd take me along to "help"....my "help" was to pump enough filling into my own jelly donut so that there was no donut left basically, just all jelly. And the same with the creme filled. If a KK franchise is run right, that's what you can expect out of a donut. I have been in some in NC, GA and FL that were great, others that had but one drop of jelly in them. If that's what you all are getting in Philly then they should all be shut down. That is not a true representation of what a KK donut is all about. Mark1npt
so nobody like KK's garbage donuts? This town has plenty of DnD's, we don't need more junk donuts like KK. DnD, of course, makes their money on coffee. Neither have particularly good doughnuts. outside federal doughnuts and beiler's, I can't think of a decent doughnut shop in center city or even it's surrounding neighborhoods. dreinterests
No wonder...$9/dozen? They aren't that good. SpeakPhilly.com

If nobody wants to go to Krispy Kreme, how are you going to stop them? georgekissel
KK failed the 1st time around in the Philly area, so with no changes made to the product what makes them think there will be success this time around? Taxpaying Voter- Actually Krispy Kreme didnt fail the first time around. It was highly successful, especially the cottman location which had over 10 trucks a day delivering KK doughnuts to area stores, along with lines every day all day at the location. The reason it didnt stay around was because the owner was a moron and got himself into so much debt, the courts made him abruptly close all locations including the most profitable one at Cottman, most likely because there are too many other morons in philly who don't know how to run business either. So most likely the judge figured to stop the fiasco while they were ahead. These owners now don't seem to be much better, but at least they are closing only one location which isn't too bad. CC people are health nuts. KK is like crack, and CC folk are mosltly "better" that everyone. So it's also no surprise it didnt last there.
I love donuts not matter who makes them. masterncommander not EVERYONE is a health nut or wants to be one as exhibited by what I see on the streets of Philadelphia. vrb1955
fat tony knows donuts.KK really did not live up to the hype. fat tony
