Bierstube in Old City to close

The half-dozen staffers at Bierstube German Tavern (206 Market St.) in Old City were told on Wednesday, Jan. 18 that last call would be Jan. 29.

Founded by Mike Naessens of the nearby Eulogy Belgian Tavern, the restaurant had reached the end of its five-year lease.

Historic Qingdao Inc., which operates Bierstube, said in a statement that gift certificates would be honored till the closing. The address germantavern@gmail.com was provided for those who cannot redeem them in time.

The statement said the employees will be assisted in finding other employment.

The liquor license will be sold and transferred to a Giant Food supermarket on Grant Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. Supermarkets, seeking to sell wine, beer, and spirits, are snapping up liquor licenses that otherwise would be sold among the restaurants on the open market.

The going rate for an "R" or restaurant license in Philadelphia is about $185,000.
