A literal pizza boom in Wayne

Vecchia was shut down in April by an explosion, while a second parlor seems to have closed.

Wayne may be one of the most pizza-ed of the Philadelphia suburbs.

At the moment though, the commercial area is down two parlors.

Vecchia, the Neapolitan pizza specialist that opened last October at 134 N. Wayne Ave., in the former newspaper building next to Great American Pub, has been closed since April 20. That evening, just as owner Frank Nattle was packing up, a PECO transformer beneath the building exploded, sending glass flying as the facade crumbled. The building, which houses a half-dozen businesses, is still without power and likely will be for some time, he said, estimating that he will be closed for an additional two months.

Also, West Avenue Pizza & Grill, in the Anthony Wayne building around the corner on Lancaster Avenue, has that fresh "out of business" look after three years. Father-and-son owners Nick and Constandino Petsinis could not be reached for comment.
