Kumar's Goal Gives Explorers 1-0 Win Over Saint Francis (Pa.)

PHILADELPHIA –La Salle senior Neelam Kumar scored one minute into the second half and her goal proved to be enough in a 1-0 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.) in the home opener on a warm Saturday afternoon at DeVincent Field.

Sophomore Lisa Shaffer made five saves for her first shutout of the season and fourth of her career, putting her in seventh on La Salle's all-time list.

Neither team could get on the board in the first half as the Red Flash (2-1) controlled play for most of the opening stanza. The visitors held an 8-4 lead in shots and had both penalty corners in the first half.

Just after halftime, the Kumar followed up a rebound off a shot by junior Mariel Papa to find the back of the cage to make it 1-0, La Salle. It was the only goal of the contest and allowed the Explorers (2-2) to improve to 6-0 all-time against Saint Francis (Pa.)

The Red Flash held a 14-13 advantage in shots and a 6-4 lead in corners.

Katelyn Vitali had eight saves for Saint Francis (Pa.).

La Salle will visit city rival Villanova on Wednesday at 7 PM.
