No. 1 Old Dominion Tops Drexel 2-1 on Sunday

Philadelphia - No. 1 Old Dominion defeated Drexel, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Buckley Field. The Dragons held the nation's top team to a 1-1 tie at half, but Old Dominion's penalty corner goal in the second half helped secure the win. The Lady Monarchs outshot Drexel, 24-3, and held a 10-1 advantage in penalty corners. The Dragons are now 9-5 overall and 3-2 in CAA play. Old Dominion improved to 14-0.

In the opening thirty seconds, Drexel powered into the Lady Monarch's circle and earned the game's first penalty corner. Old Dominion's goalkeeper Devon Seifert blocked Senior Sofia Sanguinetti's reverse shot from the top of the circle, but Ashley Santee deflected the rebound into the cage. Junior Maartje van Rijwijk looked to put points on the board for the Lady Monarch's, but Drexel's Kim Chiarelli deflected the sailing shot away into open space.

At 13:10 in the first, Old Dominion had two back-to-back penalty corner opportunities. On the second attempt, redshirt senior Stephanie Kratzer sweept the ball into the cage to tie the game, 1-1. Old Dominion had a number of scoring opportunities, but the Dragon's defense helped keep the game even as the opening half came to an end.

With just over eight minutes into the second half, Old Dominion's Maartje van Rijwijk reverse hit the ball into the lower right of the cage. The Dragons kept the intensity high throughout the final half, but the Lady Monarch's held onto the 2-1 lead until time expired.

Senior goalkeeper Kim Chiarelli posted a new career high with nine saves. The Bridgeton, New Jersey native now has 35 stops on the season.

The Dragons return to action on Sunday, October 16 at 12:30 p.m. in a non-conference match-up against No. 20 Louisville.
