Temple Golf Wins Rain-Shortened URI Spring Invitational

PORTSMOUTH, RI -With a forecast for inclement weather on Saturday, Temple head golf coach Brian Quinn told his team to play Friday's round at the URI Spring Invitational as if it was the final one. That advise paid dividends as the Owls placed first Friday, and as expected, Saturday's round was cancelled. As a result, Temple won its first tournament since the 2008 Philadelphia Big 5 Invitational held October 11-12.

"This is great for our young kids and really good for their confidence, especially heading into the A10 Championship," Quinn said.  "I really have to credit Andrew Mason,  He has done an unbelieveable job as our team captain considering we have three freshmen in the starting lineup."

Mason lead the squad and tied for third overall with a one over-par 71.  Freshman Steve Burak carded a two-over 73 to tie for sixth while freshmen Connor McNicholas and Russell Hartung were deadlocked in 15th place with 75s.  Sophomore Devin Bibeau rounded out the Temple squad with an 80 (t-36th).

Temple won the Invitational by four strokes with a team score of 299. Host Rhode Island fielded two teams with the Rams B squad placing second (299) while its' A team is tied for third with Iona and Bryant at 302.  Saint Joseph's is next with a 304 followed by Army (305), Canisius and Fordham (308), Siena (314) and Providence (348).

Army's Anthony Kim was the lone golfer to shoot under par, carding a two-under 69 to earn medalist honors.

The Owls next compete at the A10 Championships, held at the Mission Inn Resort Club in Orlando, Fla from April 29 through May 1.
