The Saint Joseph's softball team took advantage of a Florida International error in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon at the USF UnderArmour Invitational. With the win, the Hawks capped the tournament with a 4-1 mark and improved to 9-5 on the season.
With the game tied at 2-2, sophomore Rochelle Christman singled with one out and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. The Hawks placed rookie Lindsey Williams at second as a pinch runner, replacing Christman, and then had her move to third as sophomore Dana Parks reached safely on a fielder's choice.
On the next at-bat, senior Laura Cardone drilled a shot back to pitcher Ashley McClain. However, the Golden Panthers' ace couldn't handle the ball, allowing Cardone to reach safely and Williams to cross the plate with the winning run.
Saint Joseph's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore Shannon Kramer singled home Cardone and Parks.
Florida International tied the game in the fifth, plating the first run on an illegal pitch by SJU junior starter Erin Gallagher. Kayla Burri singled off Ashway to tie the score as McClain scored from second.
Parks, Kramer and Christman accounted for all three SJU hits, while Gallagher gave up a run on four hits over 5.2 innings of work. Ashway picked up the win, allowing one run on 1.1 innings of work, while striking out three.
