Free Throws Lift Temple Women’s Basketball to Victory Against Buffalo

PHILADELPHIA – Scoring 26 points at the free throw line, the Temple women’s basketball team earned its first win with a 74-64 defeat of visiting Buffalo (1-2). The Owls (1-2) were led by Shey Peddy with 20 points, and three others scored in double figures.

Peddy went 10-for-10 at the free throw line en route to her game-high 20 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds and dished a team-high three assists.

Kristen McCarthy scored 18 points for Temple, Qwedia Wallace finished with 15 points and Victoria Macaulay scored 11 while leading the Owls with a career-high nine rebounds.

Temple led for the entire first half but only once by double digits, taking a 10-point lead with under four minutes remaining. Buffalo hit two three-pointers and trailed by only six, 30-24 at the break.

The game stayed close until late in the second half as the Bulls tied the game on three occasions and took a one-point lead at the 11-minute mark.

Temple led by just one, 48-47 with 8:55 remaining, but went on a 16-3 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach for Buffalo. Free throws became crucial down the stretch of the second half, but Peddy alone was 8-for-8 in the final three minutes.

Kourtney Brown led the Bulls with a double-double of 17 points and 18 rebounds, while Brittany Hedderson scored 19 points for Buffalo.

The Owls will be back at home for their next game, a 7:00 p.m. contest against Northern Illinois on Tuesday, Nov. 23 in McGonigle Hall.
