Minnesota's Yohn makes amends in NCAA Wrestling Championships

Sonny Yohn said he let himself down on Thursday when he lost in the second round of the NCAA Wrestling Championships and went into his Friday match looking for redemption. The Minnesota junior scored a 5-3 win in the wrestleback round over Oregon State’s Chade Hanke. Yohn took over in the third period as he outscored his opponent 3-1. In the period, he sensed fatigue in Hanke and was able to take advantage of it.

Sonny Yohn said he let himself down on Thursday when he lost in the second round of the NCAA Wrestling Championships and went into his Friday match looking for redemption.

The Minnesota junior scored a 5-3 win in the wrestleback round over Oregon State's Chade Hanke. Yohn took over in the third period as he outscored his opponent 3-1. In the period, he sensed fatigue in Hanke and was able to take advantage of it.

"Everyone's kind of on edge right now," said Yohn. "We all want to win, just have to get rid of that little bit of doubt."

So far, the Big Ten Conference has a good showing in the team standings at the NCAA Championships with three schools in the top 10. Penn State is ranked second with 60.5 points; Iowa third with 51 points and the Golden Gophers sit at the tenth spot with 30.5 points. Yohn said that the wrestling community certainly respects the quality of wrestling in the Conference.

"I'd  say Penn State and Iowa definitely (are showing the Big Ten superiority), but we're not really living up to expectations right now," Yohn said.
