Paterno in serious condition
Sue Paterno has summoned family and friends to the hospital bedside of iconic former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.
The worst possible scenario for Penn State football just got worse.
The Associated Press reported that the Paterno family says doctors have "characterized his status as serious."
Reports from State College on Saturday afternoon said iconic former Penn State coach Joe Paterno — ousted by the University's Board of Trustees in the wake of the massive child sex abuse scandal that engulfed the program in November — is in grave condition.
Sue Paterno, the coach's wife of nearly 50 years, reportedly has asked some close family friends and members of Joe Paterno's staff to the hospital in State College where Paterno has been undergoing treatments for lung cancer.
A source told the Citizens Voice of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., that the coach had wanted to see them and say a final goodbye.
Paterno, diagnosed with cancer days after his Nov. 9 firing, has been weakened by radiation and chemotherapy treatments. The longtime coach turned 85 in December.
