Farfan Goes on Offensive In Union Win
Michael Farfan is a stand-up performer. On the night the Union rookie midfielder-defender had his best offensive showing, he criticized himself for his defense.
Still, without his work on offense the Union wouldn't have earned one of their most important wins of the season, Thursday's 3-2 victory over D.C. United.
That win moved the Union to second place in the Eastern Conference with four games left.
The playoff race is so tight that they haven't clinched one of the 10 Major League Soccer berths, but could be on the verge with more efforts like Thursday's and just four regular season games remaining
Either way, Farfan had a long cross for an assist on Sebastien Le Toux's second goal and then scored the game-winner in the 57th minute on a blast from 22 yards out.
Farfan was happy to help his team earn three points.
He played mainly midfield but also a little bit as a defender against United. While his offensive performance was impressive, Farfan said his defense left something to be desired.
"It feels good," he said about his offensive performance. "After I made a couple of mistakes in the back and gave them two goals basically."
Farfan said that Dwayne De Rosario, who headed in the first goal off a corner. The second goal to tie the score was scored by Andy Najar, who Farfan said was his man.
"I've got to do a better job there," he said.
So Farfan isn't going to get big-headed even after almost equaling his season output in one half.
He entered the game with one goal and two assists in 16 games.
Farfan said he learned a good defensive lesson on an evening when he performed a pretty good one on offense.
