Unite Fitness Decathlon: Keeping the fun in fitness

Staying fit and healthy doesn't have to be all work and no play according to the creators of the Unite Fitness Decathlon (UFD). In the hopes of inspiring people to change the way they look at cross-training, they developed 10 fitness challenges that are all mixed up along a 10K trail run.

Staying fit and healthy doesn't have to be all work and no play according to the creators of the Unite Fitness Decathlon (UFD). In the hopes of inspiring people to change the way they look at cross-training, they developed 10 fitness challenges that are all mixed up along a 10K trail run.

What kind of challenges can you expect? Along the course, you will be expected to perform suspension rows, box jumps, rope slams as well as a lunge walk. See the layout of the course here.

What makes this decathlon perfect for newbie runners is that you have plenty of ways to participate even if you are uncertain that you can complete the full course. You have three categories to which you can sign up for. The competitive division is for those who are going for the win while the completion division is for those who are just trying for their personal best. The relays are great for a group of friends who want to team up together. Only those in the competitive division are committed to finish the full race, so it takes the stress off runners in the other categories. Having fun and training in a healthier way are the main goals. Expect a full workout that tests all your muscle groups and helps build your endurance and athleticism.

Be sure to bring your kids along for support because there will be plenty of fun activities for them as well including a Water Balloon Alley and much more inside Carousel Village. Also, don't forget to stay for the post race party. Celebrate your accomplishment with music, food and beer. All proceeds from the sale of food and beverages will go to the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a nonprofit organization focused on fighting childhood obesity. A portion of all race proceeds will also go to the alliance.

The race is Saturday, October 11 at the Carousel Village (in the back behind Transcend Fitness and Carousel Crossfit), 591 Durham Rd in Newtown, Pa. The first wave of the race will start at 9:00 a.m. To register or for more information, visit http://www. http://unitefitnessdecathlon.com/
