Severino Gonzalez to make spot start Tuesday

Phillies pitching prospect Severino Gonzalez will make his major league debut Tuesday in a spot start against the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Phillies pitching prospect Severino Gonzalez will make his major league debut Tuesday in a spot start against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

The Phillies opted against another bullpen game. Reliever Dustin McGowan started Thursday's game but ran out of gas in the fourth inning.

"He's obviously starting so he'll give us a lift as far as having a starting pitcher and keep our bullpen intact," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said of Gonzalez.

Gonzalez, 22, recorded a 3.57 ERA over his first three starts at triple-A Lehigh Valley this season. The righthander has allowed 20 hits over 17 2/3 innings but has issued only two walks. He was slated to start Sunday for the IronPigs.

Gonzalez made a Grapefruit League start for the Phillies during spring training. He allowed four hits over three scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves.

The Phillies will need to make a roster move before Tuesday's game because Gonzalez is not on the 40-man roster.
