Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson isn’t wasting any time getting things done on the field this offseason.

However, instead of calling the plays and looking for open receivers on the football field, Wilson was taking ground balls on the baseball diamond as he joined the Texas Rangers for spring training in Surprise, Arizona.

The Rangers acquired Wilson in last December’s minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft, which permits him to be with the team at spring training.

Wilson, who previously played in the minor leagues for the Colorado Rockies, joined the Rangers for practice Monday morning, participating in drills and observing batting practice. But the Seattle quarterback did not play in the game against the Cleveland Indians in the afternoon.

Rangers manager Ron Washington was impressed by Wilson’s all-around performance.

“He surprised me for not being out on the baseball field for a while,” Washington said. “I might have burned his legs up a little bit, but he made it through all the drills and did a fantastic job. He’s got tremendous aptitude.”

Wilson also greeted fans; some dressed in Seahawks colors of course, as well as the media after the game.

Wilson joins a number of other current NFL players who were also drafted by the major leagues, including San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick in 2009 by the Chicago Cubs.

Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker was drafted in 2008 by the Milwaukee Brewers and then again in 2009 by the Minnesota Twins. Also with a local connection, Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper was drafted in 2006 by the Phillies.
