SAN FRANCISCO --- Chase Utley continues to progress back from the ankle injury that landed him on the disabled list on June 24. The 36-year-old second baseman took light ground balls on Friday and has also resumed running.

"It felt great," he said on Sunday at AT&T Park. "Ankle's definitely in a better place than it was two weeks ago or three weeks ago."

Utley, who during the all-star break will stay in San Francisco where he makes his offseason home, will resume hitting after the Phillies begin their second half on Friday.

"There's no exact date on it," he said. "But it's a good sign that I'm able to run and take ground balls and feel very comfortable doing it."

Utley was hitting a major-league worst .179 at the time he was placed on the DL. It remains to be seen how much he will play upon his return given Cesar Hernandez has seized control of the Phillies' everyday second baseman role.
