Adam Morgan to start Friday for Phillies

Adam Morgan will start for the Phillies on Friday night against Cleveland after the team promoted him in the afternoon from triple-A Lehigh Valley.

It will be Morgan's first start in the majors this season. He started 15 games with the Phillies last season as he debuted in the majors a year and a half after undergoing difficult shoulder surgery. He will be the first lefthanded starter the Phillies have used this season.

To make room for Morgan, righthander Luis Garcia was optioned to triple A.

Morgan, 26, allowed seven runs in three starts with the IronPigs. He struck out 20 batters and walked four in 172/3 innings. His last start was April 21, when Morgan struck out six batters and allowed two runs in seven innings.

He had a strong showing in spring training before the Phillies decided to keep Vince Velasquez as their No. 5 starter. Morgan added a cutter to his pitching repertoire and saw his fastball's velocity improve as his shoulder grew stronger.
