Phillies acquire Jayson Nix

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. suggested that the Phillies could look outside the organization to fill its bench and that is what they did with the acquisition of Jayson Nix from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations.

The 31-year-old Nix was added to the Phillies 40-man roster.

The Phillies also optioned righthander Phillippe Aumont to Lehigh Valley and told infielder Reid Brignac that he has not made the team.

A spring non-roster invitee of the Rays, Nix played for the New York Yankees last season, batting .236 with three home runs and 24 RBI.

From the Phillies perspective, his true value comes on defense. Last season he made 48 appearances at shortstop, 41 at third base and four at second base.

He is the brother of former Phillies Laynce Nix.

Jayson Nix is a career .218 hitter. The Phillies will be the sixth major league team he has played for.

Aumont likely sealed his fate by allowing two runs in a 1/3 of an inning during Friday's 3-0 exhibition loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citizens Bank Park.

Brignac batted .316 (6 for 19) this spring, but he is just a .221 career hitter. He can also play second and third base, but has played the majority of his career at short.
