Voracek not carried away by quick start

Flyers winger Jake Voracek isn’t spending his time looking at the scoring leaders even though he is near the top.

Flyers winger Jake Voracek isn't spending his time looking at the scoring leaders even though he is near the top.

Voracek entered Monday second in the NHL with 16 points and was tied for the lead with 13 assists. With the Flyers 4-5-2 record, Voracek feels this is certainly not the time to gloat.

"It would be better if we get some wins with that," he said after Monday's practice at the Skate Zone.

Coach Craig Berube says that Voracek's fast start can be attributed to his offseason work. Voracek is averaging 18 minutes and 51 seconds per game.

"We talked about him coming into camp in really good shape and put himself in a good spot from the get-go," Berube said. "He works hard and when you work hard, your skill takes over."

The Flyers begin the first of a four-game homestand on Tuesday against the Edmonton Oilers. Voracek says the Flyers must take advantage of their home cooking. .

"We had a rough trip in Florida and have four home games and have to get at least six points out of this," he said.

And he also realizes that the Flyers have to reverse the trend of starting games out slowly. The Flyers have allowed the first goal in nine of the first 11 games, including Saturday's 2-1 loss at Florida. When the Flyers score first they are 1-0-1, but are 3-5-1 when the opposition gets the first goal. .

"If you are down a goal every game it takes a lot of extra energy to get back and you try to force things you don't want to do," he said. "We have to get better at that because that is sometimes when games are decided."

Voracek has recorded at least one point in 10 of the first 11 games, but he refuses to get carried away with his quick start.

"I have had a good start but we are only 11 games in," he said. "We can start talking about it 60-65 games in and now I am just trying to help the team win."
