More positives than negatives in latest Flyers loss

The Flyers lost their sixth straight home game Thursday, dropping a 1-0 overtime decision to San Jose.

They are 0-3-3 at the Wells Fargo Center since beating the Rangers nearly a month ago.

But there were more positives than negatives on Thursday.

Consider:

* The Flyers outshot their opponents for the first time in the last 12 games. They had a 34-21 advantage _ 28-11 after the first period.

* After the first 10 minutes, the Flyers controlled most of the game.

* The defense played arguably its best game of the season.

* The Flyers' penalty kill was 4 for 4, and it allowed a total of just two shots on the Sharks' four power plays.

* Goalie Steve Mason had his third straight strong start and is starting to resemble the goalie who had a career season in 2014-15.

* The struggling second line _ Sean Couturier centering Wayne Simmonds and Matt Read _ created several scoring chances and had 11 shots on goal.

"I think we put a pretty complete performance out there again," coach Dave Hakstol said.

Well, except for the fact that their offense stalled again. The Flyers, for whatever reason, can't seem to finish off plays at the Wells Fargo Center.

They have scored a league-worst 15 goals in their 10 home games.

"We got a lot of shots," said Couturier, who had five of them and showed signs of breaking out of his offensive funk. "I think we played a solid game, but we just have to find a way to crash the net and jump on those second and third rebounds. We have to try and generate more scoring."

The Flyers are now averaging 1.79 goals per game, placing them last in the 30-team NHL

Next up: The Flyers (6-8-5) are in Ottawa (9-5-5) on Saturday night before hosting Carolina on Monday, when Hurricanes assistant Rod Brind'Amour will be inducted into the Flyers Hall of Fame.  Brind'Amour played parts of nine seasons with the Flyers, collecting 601 points in 633 games.

Breakaways. The Flyers are 3-4-3 at home, 3-4-2 on the road....San Jose  (11-8) has won the first four games of its six-game road trip....The Flyers allowed 21 shots, equaling the fewest they have surrendered this season. They also allowed 21 in a 3-2 OT win over Carolina.
