NFL salary cap set at $167 million in 2017; Eagles have $174.9 million in total cap space

The NFL set the 2017 salary cap for $167 million, an increase of $10 million from last season. The Eagles carried over $7.9 million from last season, giving them a total salary cap of $174.9 million.

So the question you want answered is how much do the Eagles have to spend. Well, it's complicated. The short answer is if free agency opened tomorrow, the Eagles would have a little less than $11 million in cap space. Of course, free agency does not open tomorrow, and the Eagles can still make adjustments to open cap space.

But from the $174.9 million in total cap space, the Eagles have about $157 million in salary obligations and about $7 million in dead money from players who have been cut or traded. And the available space does not even include money that must be designated to rookies, so the Eagles have even less to spend.

However, free agency does not open until March 9. With Howie Roseman overseeing the front office and director of football administration Jake Rosenberg handling the cap management, the Eagles have been able to open cap space in the past. They'll need to find a way to do it in the next week.
