Mychal Kendricks still absent from practice; Marcus Smith working at inside linebacker

Mychal Kendricks did not practice again on Thursday, and it continues to appear unlikely that Kendricks will play Sunday against Washington.

"He's day to day," coach Chip Kelly said. "I don't know what his status will be until the end of the week. …we'll see if there's something he can do tomorrow or Saturday,"

Kelly would not discuss the degree of Kendricks' calf injury.

"I don't ask," Kelly said. "Can we get this out of the way: I'm never going to ask. I don't care. Just tell me if they can play or can't play. That's all I ever ask."

Kelly said both Casey Matthews and Emmnauel Acho are rotating in at inside linebacker. Marcus Smith is also taking snaps at that spot.

"When you only have four inside linebackers in your 53 and one of them is hurt, you have to bring one of them over," Kelly said. "We'll see how he fits and what he can do. You got to be prepared if you lose a guy or two at inside linebacker. What do you do? No different than Trey Burton being another running back for us."
