The Jets announced that Geno Smith will be the Jets' starting quarterback Week 1 against Oakland, after he beat out Michael Vick for the job, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.
Smith didn’t flop in the preseason and escaped injury, a double dip of good news for a team that all along wanted the second-year signal caller to be the Week 1 starter over 34-year-old insurance policy Mike Vick. It was a relatively controversy-free preseason devoid of drama, doubt and sideways antics.
“He’s done everything that we’ve asked him,” Ryan said. “This is no slight to Mike Vick. . . . I wanted to come out of this knowing that we had two really good quarterbacks that we think we can win games with. In my heart, I feel that we have two that we can win with.”
