Michael Vick loses Jets starting QB battle

The Jets announced that Geno Smith will be the Jets' starting quarterback Week 1 against Oakland, after he beat out Michael Vick for the job, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Smith didn't flop in the preseason and escaped injury, a double dip of good news for a team that all along wanted the second-year signal caller to be the Week 1 starter over 34-year-old insurance policy Mike Vick. It was a relatively controversy-free preseason devoid of drama, doubt and sideways antics.

"He's done everything that we've asked him," Ryan said. "This is no slight to Mike Vick. . . . I wanted to come out of this knowing that we had two really good quarterbacks that we think we can win games with. In my heart, I feel that we have two that we can win with."

Jenny Vrentas of Sports Illustrated wrote that the Jets were disappointed in Michael Vick's lack of drive to win the starting job over Smith:

"Some Jets coaches have privately expressed disappointment that Vick didn't show up more hell-bent on winning the starting job, or at least a little more vested in making Ryan lose sleep again as he agonized over a difficult decision."

That sentiment goes against the Michael Vick who always had extreme confidence in his own abilities in his five years in Philly.

While Vick is not a quarterback you want to have starting for you if you have Super Bowl aspirations, the NFL is more fun when he is a starter somewhere. Unless Smith gets hurt or plays poorly, Vick will not be a starting QB in 2014.
