Barbre, Goode lost for season; Mathis to IR-return; Eagles sign 3

The Eagles have placed guard Evan Mathis, who suffered an MCL sprain in the season opener, on Injured Reserve-designated to return, according to a source close to the situation.

UPDATE:

The Eagles announced that tackle Allen Barbre (ankle) and linebacker Najee Goode (torn pectoral muscle) were placed on season-ending Injured Reserve and that guard Evan Mathis (MCL sprain) was placed on Injured Reserve-designated to return.

Free agent offensive lineman Wade Smith was signed on Tuesday to take one of the roster spots and linebacker Emmanuel Acho and tackle Kevin Graf were signed off the practice squad to take the other two.

Barbre was starting at right tackle for the suspended Lane Johnson. Goode was the Eagles' third inside linebacker and was expected to play snaps on defense this season to give the 30-year-old DeMeco Ryans the occassional break.

Mathis, who went to his first Pro Bowl last season, had started in 48 of the previous 49 games for the Eagles at left guard.

Smith, an interior lineman, is an 11-year veteran and was released by the Seahawks last month. Acho will take Goode's spot on the roster. He spent most of last season on the Eagles' practice squad. Graf, an undrafted rookie out of Southern Cal, played at tackle during the preseason.

FROM EARLIER:

The Eagles have placed guard Evan Mathis, who suffered an MCL sprain in the season opener, on Injured Reserve-designated to return, according to a source close to the situation.

Mathis will be eligible to come off IR for practice on Oct. 20 and on Nov. 4 for the Nov. 10 Monday night home game against the Carolina Panthers.

Mathis' knee injury occurred in the second quarter of the the Eagles' 34-17 win over the Jaguars. An MRI on Monday revealed a Grade 3 sprain, which typically requires 6-8 weeks of recovery, but Mathis will get a second opinion on Wednesday.

The roster move will make room for the signing of offensive lineman Wade Smith. An 11-year veteran, Smith was released by the Seahawks last month. He previously played guard for the Texans and went to his lone Pro Bowl following the 2012 season. The 6-foot-4, 295-pound Smith turned 33 in April.

He agreed to terms with the Eagles on Tuesday, according to his agent, Brian Parker. Smith will provide depth with Mathis and tackle Allen Barbre out for extended periods. Barbre suffered a high ankle sprain against the Jaguars, but saw a foot specialist and could need season-ending surgery.

Top reserve Matt Tobin has been sidelined with a high ankle sprain and isn't expected to be ready by Monday night's game against the Colts. Andrew Gardner and David Molk filled in for Barbre and Mathis after they left Sunday. Gardner could take Barbre's spot at right tackle or the Eagles could move right guard Todd Herremans outside. Denins Kelly, who didn't dress against the Jaguars, could fill in for Mathis with Molk primarily the backup center.

The Eagles lost starting right tackle Lane Johnson for the first four games of the season after being suspended for using an banned substance. They'll be without four of their top seven offensive linemen for the Colts game.
