Eagles notes: Thoughts on DeSean Jackson to the Redskins, and whether or not he was a 'one trick pony'

Reaction to DeSean Jackson's release carried through the weekend, and will likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future. We'll try to get away from it and cover other Eagles-related issues this offseason, but for now, some DeSean-related notes:

The Redskins are reportedly the first team that DeSean Jackson will visit, and that visit is scheduled for today. It was my thinking that it would take some time for Jackson to be signed by another team, since other teams around the league would undoubtedly need to do investigations of their own before shelling out bigtime money to a player with so many unknowns. Every team in the league will have a file on Jackson, back from when they scouted him prior to the 2008 draft, when he fell to 49th overall due to character concerns. Many teams may have also gotten a head start on doing their due diligence when they knew he could be had in a trade.

However, if there was one team that I could see foregoing thorough investigative work on the demands of the owner to just go get a player, that would be Dan Snyder and the Washington Redskins. On the one hand, it would such a Redskiny thing to do to bring in a character concern player into an already unstable locker room.

On the other hand, Jackson would be a tremendous fit in that Redskins offense. The Redskins have a pair of receiving targets in WR Pierre Garcon and TE Jordan Reed who do a tremendous job of catching short to intermediate passes and getting yards after the catch. They also have a sledgehammer RB in Alfred Morris and a QB who can make plays with his legs as well as a strong arm to get the ball far down the field.

With Jackson stretching the field vertically, he would help open up a lot more space for his teammates to become even more effective underneath.

I'm sure many of you are sick of the whole thing, but Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation did a good job putting together a detailed timeline of the events of the Jaccpocalypse over the last month.

There's a common sentiment that DeSean Jackson was a one trick pony, who was only an effective player when he went deep. I disagree with that notion. Jackson caught passes all over the field, but the deep balls stand out because those were of course his biggest plays.

Jackson had 60 receiving 1st downs last year. By comparison, the NFL's leader in receptions, Pierre Garcon (113 receptions), also had 60 1st downs. The league leader in 1st downs was Brandon Marshall, who only had 10 more than Jackson, with 70. Am I to believe that Jackson caught 60 deep balls in 2013? If he did, that's one hell of a trick. I'll take that pony any day. The reality is that he worked the other areas of the field more than people think, and his usage in the short to intermediate game was effective, based on the number of times he moved the chains.

However, it's probably better stated that he only had one elite attribute, which was his speed. Take that away, and he's an ordinary player.
