Connor Barwin moving from left side to right side in Eagles defense

Connor Barwin's move from outside linebacker to defensive end has been discussed often this offseason, but Barwin has another change that will affect the way he plays: A move from the left side to the right side.

Barwin rushed mostly as the left outside linebacker during the past three seasons with the Eagles. He will play right defensive end this season, meaning he will rush against left tackles instead of right tackles.

"It's definitely a difference," Barwin said. "That's why it's good we have training camp to work the kinks out."

The position is not foreign to Barwin. He started his career in Houston as a right defensive end, registering 4.5 sacks as a rookie. The angles of his rushes are different, changing how and when he would utilize certain pass rush moves.

"There's certain things I do better on the left, there's certain things I do better on the right," Barwin said. "So Pass Rushing 101, you've got to have one move and a complement off it. So on the right, I'm going back to what I did in Houston and perfecting that craft again."

The Eagles have Vinny Curry and Brandon Graham playing left defensive end going up against right tackles, opposite of Barwin. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said the Eagles will eventually switch sides, keeping a rotation with the ends knowing both positions. But it looks like the majority of Barwin's time will be spent on the right. That means Barwin will face Pro Bowl offensive tackles such as Tyron Smith and Trent Williams this season.

"We're watching film on ourselves right now," Barwin said. "We're not watching Tyron Smith or the other left tackles I'll go against. But eventually I will. You've noticed I'm playing more on the right this year. I'm sure, eventually, we'll have situations I go back on the left and Vinny goes inside like last year. But right now, they got me on the right, and it's been good."
