Chip Kelly: Concussion protocol for Tobin, Celek best blocking TE

Eagles coach Chip Kelly said right guard Matt Tobin suffered a concussion on the final series Sunday. Andrew Gardner seems to be next up.

Eagles right guard Matt Tobin sustained a concussion on the last series of Sunday's game at Green Bay, Chip Kelly said Wednesday. Kelly said Tobin is dealing with the NFL's concussion protocol and is not practicing.

That raises the possibility of yet another injury-related change for the Birds' offensive line, which has had players in and out all year. Andrew Gardner was taking first-team reps during the early part of Wednesday's practice, the part reporters were allowed to observe. Dennis Kelly also is in the mix to step in for Tobin, Kelly said.

"We'll see what happens there," Kelly said.

Other highlights:

*Asked yet again about the progress of second-year tight end Zach Ertz, who seems to be an underutilized dynamic pass game weapon, Kelly indicated Brent Celek is getting the snaps because Celek is still a better all-around player than his understudy. "We have two very, very good tight ends ... Brent Celek's doing a helluva job. It'd be a (big) injustice if I told Brent he has to sit because I want to put someone else on the field. Brent's an outstanding blocker, I think he may be the best blocking tight end in the league. For what we do, I think he's a surehanded receiver, he had a huge game against Carolina, had (116) yard receiving. I don't think it has anything to do with Zach. It has to really do with how well Bren't playing."

*Kelly said corner Roc Carmichael, brought back Tuesday, is in good shape, is versatile, and understands the defense. He confirmed that rookie corner/safety Jaylen Watkins is now practicing exclusively at safety. Kelly seemed to be hinting that Chris Prosinski, signed Nov. 3, might be the next safety, if anything happened to a starter. "He's a real sharp guy, intelligent, he's played football in this league, at the safety position (48 games with Jacksonville over four seasons). He's not just a special teams player. I think it's just a matter of how comfortable he is with our terminology ... We haven't made any determination about who the next safety is."

*Kelly said he sat down with safety Earl Wolff on Monday "to see where he was. His leg was really bothering him," so Wolff got the MRI that led to Wolff being placed on IR, Kelly said. "Obviously he wasn't making plays like he had been before, so it had to be affecting him."

*Asked about Josh Huff's admission of frustration over a mistake-filled rookie year, Kelly agreed with Huff that it all stemmed from the shoulder injury Huff suffered in preseason, which cost him a lot of preseason reps and the first four games of the regular season. "It'll come. We have high hopes for Josh, and I think he's working extremely hard at it, but this isn't an instant success league," Kelly said. "You gotta continue to work at it, continue to grow. I think the time off that he missed really impacted him, just from a mental standpoint. I think the perception is that we run the same offense that we did at Oregon -- we don't. It's a difficult deal for anybody to come in and learn our offense."

*Kelly talked of the Tennessee Titans' aggressive, attacking scheme. "These guys will play Cover Zero," Kelly said. "That's something you have to prepare for."
