Sixers Sign Iverson
The 76ers have signed Allen Iverson to a one-year contract.
Sixers Sign Iverson
It's a done deal. The 76ers have signed free agent guard Allen Iverson, and said he will make his debut Monday night when they face the Denver Nuggets at the Wachovia Center.
"The buzz is here," Iverson's agent, Leon Rose, told the Daily News this morning. "It's a great opportunity for Allen and something I know he's extremely excited about and looking forward to."
Iverson, who lives in Atlanta, is expected to arrive in Philadelphia in the next day or two.
A source familiar with the Sixers situation said the deal is for the remainder of the season, pro-rated at $1.3 million, the NBA veterans' minimum for players with at least 10 seasons of experience. The source said it is non-guaranteed, but would become guaranteed if Iverson is on the roster Jan. 10.
"In light of the recent injury to Lou Williams, which will sideline him for close to eight weeks, we felt that Allen was the best available free agent guard to help us at this time,'' said Sixers president/general manager Ed Stefanski.
Iverson was waived Nov. 16 by the Memphis Grizzlies after appearing in just three games. He and agent Leon Rose negotiated a settlement of his one-year contract.
Iverson spent the first 10 seasons-plus of his career with the Sixers before being traded to the Nuggets in December, 2006. He was subsequently traded to the Detroit Pistons.
Iverson, 34, is a 10-time All-Star and a four-time scoring champion. He was the league's Most Valuable Player in 2000-01.

It's good to put more people in the seats. But now the Sixers will not improve long-term. Stefanski has done an awful job since taking over as GM. He's content to stay bad for a long time. snakeman

Thank God! I can finally enjoy a Sixer game once again. For all of you AI detractors...move to another city! (You are probably the same people that think McNabb is a loser) AI and McNabb have done more for this city and our teams than anyone in the history of the franchises (aside from Wilt C). If you were born in the 80's and 90's, you have no clue what it means to be a suffering Philly fan. Go AI! (the best little man to ever play hoops)! drantonio1
Phil, do you proofread before you post? Ugly looking article, but hey, you got it posted quick. The Truth Hurts- "AI back with the Sixers, ARE YOU KIDDING ME" - Tome McGinnis joeolive
it'll put butts in the seats, but this team is years away from being a contender. need two future hall of famers on one team to win a championship. look at the past 2 decades! evlowl

Senior specials at Friendly's effective on Monday. mick314- That should have been Tom, not TomE....... IF this move sells tickets and the Sixers get a lottery pick, it will be a win-win situation.... just have to sit the young guys down and tell them "Watch and learn how NOT to be a team player" joeolive
Way Kool! The circus is back in town...I heard all the employees at Fridays on City Line just quit... feudi
Team is bad. They need a superstar to improve long term. Iverson is not the answer to improve situation. mikegrim

Eighth seed, here we come baby!! What picks in the bottom third of the draft look good next year? Hobbes
Get ready for 25 shots a game and no one else touching the ball. This move is so desperate, they stink with him and without him. All this is going to do at best is make them a 7 seed in the playoffs and ruin any chance for a lottery pick. I personally hope he acts up so they can cut him and still be really bad and try to build for future years. protek67
Standby for more "its-about-me" drama. Definitely a high risk move. I'll be watching Monday night against the Nuggets....his ego won't be able to resist trying to light up 40+. I wonder what kind of "team player" he would have been, if coached by Bobby Knight? SePennartz

stefanski should be fired immediately!!!! ArtieLange- It shows the complete failure of this organization. No team in the NBA wants him and this team is so bad it signs him. Both Eds are failures. Horlet
Pro basketball is better now than it has been in a while, there a more quality teams at the top, I guess nobody watched the playoffs last year...the bottom half though, is pure garbage. ite483
Yeah, listen to the Philly "fans." We should also trade J-Roll, ditch McNabb, fire Andy Reid and John Stevens, bench Danny Briere, trade Gagne...what else do you idiots want just so you can remain bitter watching LOSING programs???!! dr.elektrika
ZZZZZZZZZZZ....ZZZZZZZZZZZZ.....ZZZZZZZZZZ...... nobodycares
Wasn't he washed up when they traded him..3 YEARS AGO? The Selector
I saw him play once from the nosebleed section-best available. AI was amazing, running around all of those bigger, badder players. Welcome Back - I hope you keep us truely amazed with your talent and love of Philadelphia! yor1lady
This franchise is nothing more than a circus act and this just proves it even more. The guys washed up and offers nothing to this team. What happened to Jordan's system??? Iverson sure doesn't fit. What a joke. GarnetValley Mike
D-Cop says dont stop eddy eddy. "sixers shock the world". D-Cop says sixers will win game 1 of the Finals. BOOM! d-cop?STOP!
A step backwards. Looks like Lurie is running the team - don't get better just put butts in the seats and get rich! jakster
I for one am proud to be one of the first true Philadelphia 76ers fans to welcome "A.I." back home where he belongs. Our team needs him. This city needs him. Not only will he show everyone that he "still got game" but also that he can be a great leader and teammate again. It's on, Jewels. We're proud to have you home! CB4
I love it! Though it makes me wonder, if this could happen, will T.O. be back next year? Super5

It really doesn't matter. The front office, with their impressive spending, has set the team back multiple years (how long until the end of Brand and Iggy's contracts?). So what if a few more foolish people go to the games? The ONLY thing that they can accomplish in the next year or two is make the 8th spot. Wouldn't we rather see them at the bottom of the league so that they have a shot at a lottery pick? doneill76- $$$$$$$$$ and no other reason. brio

Horrible move. Proves Ed Stafanski has no clue. Let the young guys play. If they lose, they can a better chance in the lottery. Iverson will be a ball hog (again). Do you think Thad Young and Andre I. would have had a chance to hit the shots they made against Mavs Monday with this cancer on the team? 76er
Iverson dribbles down court throws it to Mcnabb who tries to pass it to J-Roll but throws it atraight down at his feet , J-Roll recovers and throws it back to Iverson but it goes way over his head , Iverson gets a lucky rebound off Marc Zumoffs humungous head , he then dribbles through all five defenders and throws up a wild shot at the buzzer - AIRBALL! protek67
snakeman...It's been three years. How much have they improved without him? jockojohnson
There goes the Handicap parking spot out front of PCOM. He's a disgrace of a human. somertonspartan- sigh... dpcoz
I'm beside myself with glee! That'll sow all manner of discord--and as Phil Sheridan said in his column on Tuesday, the coach and GM might as well pack it in, along with the player development plan. That in turn means the Sixers will become the Sinkers, with a season that may call to mind the single digit wins of '72-'73. With that, they and the NBA will be relegated to page 8 of the sports section, clearing the path--and rightfully so!--for the Flyers to take command of center stage once and for all. 1940LaSalle
Is it true they are going to sign Wee Man after the initial Iverson buzz dies down? politicalcorrectnessmyace
"He's back where he belongs." In prison? misterpet
Did anyone ask Randy Ayers? Iversn cost him his job by not showing up for practice and pretty much threw him under the bus when he coached AI. Does anyone remember what Iverson did in Chicago when he refused to play? How about fan Appreciation Night? Why expose this cancer to a young team. Why win games with this guy? Ed Stanski's moves make no sense. He signs Andre I for too much, signs Brand who is not as good as before his injuries, drafts a project in Holiday. Let's Miller go and now this? CLearly, this guy has zero plan. 76er- LOVE THE FAT ANDY REID BASHING in a basketball forum! but its true. anndy reid tard is a the only thing between donovan mcnabb and the HOF. daveH
I hear that they are negotiating with Doctor J, Steve Mix and Andrew Toney to come back as well, this is going to be a great team! protek67
Seriously why does Stefanski still have a job? bobmc

I'm glad he's back. I think Andre iguodala (AI squared) can be somebody's Scottie Pippen. He's not a 1 but a good sidekick. if Iverson would've stayed 3 years ago, I think it would've helped Iggy in his developement but too late to cry now. Iverson's prime has past but he can still put up 20 any night, 30 every other to third night! If we can shove a brain into Dalembert's head, mature Thaddeus a little more, start Speights and have A.I on the point "knowing" Iggy is his "Scottie Pippen" (that's with no intentions on saying Iverson is Jordan) we will make the playoffs and give the 1 or 2 seed a very rough series, but we still won't win. And we have to scrap this Princeton Offense and run & gun! Just plain beat teams up and down the floor like the Suns do! cardierre- The sixers aren't winning ANYTHING this season, why not entertain the fans at least.
Broad Street parking = $17. Nachos and a beer $10. Wachovia seating Section 101 tickets = $170. PA unemployment compensation = $558. AI being employed....priceless! SePennartz
lmonzo, impressive! youpeoplehaveissues
But the question remains...will he come to practice? mitch of mullica
I am very happy he is back, if nothing else we get to see one of the best players in franchise history back as a sixer, I'll take my children to see him for sure, shame I gave up my season tickets prior to this season fabfan
Desperate move by a even more desperate organization. beez1228

ANYTHING at this point to help the flailing sixers. They can't get their act together, and w/AI Back the sixers can finally start winning games. DavidCBotos
we still do not make the playoffs...speights and williams being lost for two months and iguodala's inability to shoot coupled with brand's inability to post up had us jostling for a top 5 pick next year...now we have to hope we get luck at 13 or 14 when watching the draft lottery from seacaucus. Short-term ticket sales would not be nearly as beneficial as a long term winner would bring...holliday, williams, speights, smith, and young...the hope that brand, dalembert, and iggy find new homes...and a top 5 pick give me a reason to watch next year. If a 26 year old iverson in his prime couldn't share, what makes me think a bitter 34 year old in decline can take us to the top??? Is Billy King back? tkohl

M-O-N-E-Y T-A-L-K-S and management dislikes the half full Wachovia Center MORE than they dislike Iverson's annoying presence. It's all a $$$$ ploy, ladies and gentlemen. And the idiots who will, undoubtedly, come out in droves next Monday night against Denver, I guess really aren't that affected by the so-called "recession" or they would worry more about paying their mortgages, utilities and providing for their families. This is an idiotic move to say the least and Ed Stefanski and Eddie Jordan should have their respective heads examined ASAP!! And Ed Snider, this is one of your worst moves ever! Bunch of losers -always were, always will be. Bah, Humbug!!! Mughunter2009
Time for some real b-ball and for all haters go play with your b---s JBA- ALLEN IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII-VERSON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's not going to affect the growth of this team. It's a 1 year deal. When Lou Williams comes back, Iverson will have a reduced role. Jrue Holiday is just not ready to play big time minutes. He's going to be good in the future, but right now he is so young and inexperienced. I like this move because it doesn't cost the Sixers a lot of money, it's not guaranteed and it gives most people a reason to watch the Sixers now - they are just totally unwatchable right now. Stefanski hasn't done a great job, but he can't be blamed for this signing. If Lou wasn't hurt, Iverson wouldn't be here. So enjoy it everyone, I'm sure it's going to be quite a show, both on the court and at the press conferences. MarkNJ
Face it: this Sixers team is BORING. No wonder it's next to last in the league in attendance. Don't think that didn't have something to do with this deal. And face this: basketball is entertainment, and Iverson is an entertainer. The team is going nowhere ever with this Princeton offense. It cannot work in the NBA. So why not bring in a guy who makes the game fun for fans. If the team is .500 at best with or without him, why not sign him? If Lou Williams is out for two months (are you going to start Royal Ivey?), why not sign a veteran? It's not a long-term deal, and neither is the Stefanski/Jordan show. They're both good b'ball people, but the Brand signing was a mistake, and bringing in Jordan to implement an offense built for the college game was also a mistake. Might as well have some fun on the way to a first-round playoff exit. Phillies1234- AI is back and hopefully his 'game' will be to...johnnyu

Totally horrible - Stefanski has proven he has no clue ...Iverson only cares about himself, will do more harm than good...and people wonder why the Sixers are horrible????? lcr-54
Strange to see him without the tattoos and that sleeve thing on his arm. J H
Why is this the worse move. Can you blame the Sixers. A team that has been stuck in mediocrity before Iverson left. And all mediocrity has gotten this team is mid-first round picks. They have no chance in getting a top five pick this year so what is the difference. Sixers will finally put some fans in the seats, which they desperately need considering they have the worst attendance in the entire league. And the entire tank the season arguement is pathetic. No professional team has ever tanked a season. It goes against what any professional sport team stands for. PhillyWise- I can understand jumping the shark but I don't understand backing up to do it again. Joe Funk
they are just bringing another criminal back to the city! I thought we we trying to do away with that? they are still going to suck.. snyder needs to sell the team! ms101340- Forest Gumps stupid brother george bush is your co Pilot, good luck with that, LOL, LOL,LOL.......
1) Sixers definitely suck and can't play; 2) AI can play; 3) it is just a 1 yr deal = YES, good move. Folks, stop making a bid deal out of this phillies_eagles
Just so you all know, he is not the same player he was when he was here before. Really? The Buzz is here Leon? Don't think so. Now they may win 41 games vs 40 and get an even worse pick in the lottery. davekrieg
this team is a disaster. Find themselves in the same position they did 3 years ago. highest paid players, whose cap numbers restrict them from being able to make ANY personnel changes, are not their best players. By the time they coem off the books, the young guys are due for their next deals and they feel obligated to resign them. They are always fighting an uphill battle against the salary cap. Just awful. gee1971
Yes, this is a great move one which should have taken place last year. It is about time that we brought back one of our stars and allowed them to go out in the manner which they should. We should have done the same for Charles years ago. Halbogie

Don't we have enough thugs in this city with Michael Vick here? At least now they can continue going to strip clubs together. I don't pay attention to the Sixers anyway and I doubt this will change much. At least we have the Phillies and Flyers as the organizations in this city that haven't sold out. bd1979
will it change the outcome of their season? ... No, but at least I now have a reason to go to a game. johnnyMo
This will solve the attendance woes! It might boost the nightly average from 4,700 to 4,950. This is just another poor, short sighted decision by the 76ers management. It is time for Ed Snider & Peter Lukko to clean house across the board with the 76ers. It has become abundantly clear that neither the basketball or business operations people have any clue in what to do to get this thing headed in the right direction. The good news is only 3 weeks until the first Allen Iverson celebriduck giveaway!!!! downthemiddle
Here comes another T.O. like coverage of this paper on Iverson, get ready for a roller coaster ride till the end of the season.... Dadair1
Will Coach Jordan fine him if he misses "practice". Philly_Guy
I will agree that the only thing that will excite me now is the dismissal of Ed Stefanski DAMAYOR
I can't wait to hear/read all of the blind "A.I." supporters stand up for him when he continues to be a joke of a team player and just chucks "the rock!". Are you kidding me, it's not 2001 and Larry Brown isn't the coach. He quit on this last 2 teams? And the smart money says he will quit again. Rob
I really don't get this move...aside of putting fans in the seats. Is this move going to move them closer to a championship? No. He could infect the young players with his lousy work ethic and "me first" attitude. The Sixers will get a few more wins, a worse position in the lottery, and be in the same position next year. I think this is absolute BS....he was poison back then and he is still poison...a bad attitude and a big ego can ruin an organization! PSwedance4U
snakeman why do you care about people in the seats. are you losing money due to the attendance figures? every game they win due to his performance will lead them closer to a first round sweep and further from a lottery chance that could actually make this team better for more than one year non guarenteed. 4for44ever

I can't blame them for making this move. This gives the roster better positioning in my opinion. nceagle

It's a good move from a PR perspective and putting people in the seats. It's a relatively inexpensive move compared to the wasted money on other acquisitions like Webber or Brand, or the extended contract to Igoudala, or the ridiculous contract to Dalembert that makes him a liability when it comes to trading him. andy_g87

I just found out why the Sixers don't draw any fans. Have you seen the prices they are charging? I was thinking about getting a ticket for Monday, but no way at those prices. scars73
Let me ask you this--what is worse? The 76ers re-signing Iverson or the Eagles re-signing Trotter? I truly believe the Eagles move was far worse--becasue Iverson can still play--Trotter can barely walk! But I still don't like the move--this will cut time for Holiday and T. Young. Jakerock5
This move is perfectly consistent with the NBA circus approach. Each team needs a high profile "performer" on the team to generate interest. Before this morning the Sixers had none and their attendance was 2nd worst in the league. Pro hoops is a joke - if you enjoy the game, college (or even high school)b-ball is far superior. CommonSenze

IF AI can bring the word TEAM to his game it could be a very good move especially for our younger players as you could never question his hustle. If he doesn't it will seem lot a lot longer a season then we have already endured. hrlevine
Atlantic City beware. Heinekin and Henny for all the Boys. Tipping----Whats that?? Snoddy- Everyone has said he's slowed down,,,,,, if he has,, then maybe he can actually run a NBA offense,,,,, and it will hold us over until Lou W. & Maurice S. get back,,,,,, And another thing,,, maybe his presence along with Brand (playing up to his career potential & #'s) will be just what the Sixers need to make a stronger playoff run.........
- The Heart of the team is finally back! You could knock this guy for his selfishness with the rock. You can criticize him for not wanting to practice. You CAN NEVER deny that this guy leaves everything on the floor. I'll take a warrior any day of the week. Allen is a Warrior. Allen is a fighter. Allen is Philly. Welcome home, Allen.
Hey Elton, Eddie J., Iggy...guess what? It's not your team anymore. Who knows, it may be good for Elton. Iggy, not so much. Eddie, a nightmare. hoopdoc
A.I."The GOD" Is Back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only negative, this will prolong the coach & gm tenure, because as long as A.I. is here, we will make the Play-offs. Now we need to address our front-court. I heard you(Phil Jasner) say, you wouldn't trade the future either Speights or Young. In my opinion anyone on this team can be traded, however Iggy & Speights are the ONLY two(as well as THE A.I.)players I would strongly hesitate against trading. Iggy is not A Franchise player, however he is a very good all around player who needs to be second fiddle to a top flight scorer and the boy Speights is going to be good, he has that factor about him, whereas with Young, I don't see it, he's a nice piece, but in Philly we don't need that, when we have Iggy, trade Young for McGee(Wiz) sore up our front line for the next decade. This team can make some noise, Iverson is surrounded by some nice pieces, play Carney at the 2(3pt. shooter & defense) and Dalembert has too stay on the floor and play defense the way he used to. Now we have a legitimate scorer, we can make some noise. Let Holiday sit, learn and develop his game, people compare him to Deron Williams, Williams didn't start immediately, I think he sat his first year. Anguilla Al
Lmonzo still and always loved A.I. LOL As for the media, GET A CLUE!! This is about money. Have any of you been to a game this year( ghost town? There is no way that Snyder, Stefanski, Comcast and Lukko would ever let this team tank for the chance at a ping pong draft ball. If this is the same ole A.I. Stefanski will be looking for work. dlando- Iverson represents the absolute worst in sports. He was poison for the team last time around and will be worse this time around. Far, far more trouble than he was worth. With the Eagles' signing of Michael Vick are the Philadelphia professional sports teams the last way station for all the loser thugs who no other team wants? pajamas
Who's the guy in the picture? kidsfirst
The picture is AI when he was a rookie??????????????? tobad
A mistake Helen A. Handbasket
A mistake Helen A. Handbasket
The bottom line IS the bottom line. This team was trash and nobody was interested in traveling cross town to see this crappy product. Bringing back Iverson is compelling and intriguing theatre and fans will come in droves and spend lots of money to see it, pure and simple. I haven't been to a Sixers game in 2 years. I will be there Monday. Guess why? It aint Maurice Speights or frigging Thaddeus Young Will54
