District agreed to allow Ackerman's unemployment claim

Former Superintendent Arlene Ackerman may be right about special interests stalling reform. (Clem Murray / Staff Photographer)

You didn't think you'd heard the end of Arlene Ackerman, did you?

As the Daily News has reported, the controversial former Philadelphia School District superintendent has applied for unemployment benefits.  That's on top of the payout of nearly $1 million that she got as a result of her separation agreement.

It's a shock.  But if you read Ackerman's separation agreement carefully, you saw this coming.

The district "agrees not to contest any claims which Dr. Ackerman may make for unemployment compensation benefits..."

I'm mulling my entry for It's Our Money's Ackerman haiku contest.

Is it just me or am I missing something? I thought as with Social Security, all employees pay into Federal Unemployment Insurance? Like you, myself and every other employed reader, FUTA taxes should have been withheld from Ackerman's pay check? Why should she not be able to draw down on an account she paid into?

What a scam artist! Ackerman is clearly good at negotiating fat settlements for herself. Running the district? Not so much.

This is a woman with no shame at all. Yes, she is technically entitled (and she knows a thing or two about entitlement) to compensation, but a normal person might have forgone applying for unemployment when they're sitting on a golden parachute. Just shows how motivated she is by money. Also surprising her friends-in-high-places haven't found her a job yet...

@aliali- You are incorrect. Unemployment taxes are largely assessed on the employer.

FUTA is the federal unemployment tax that is only assessed on employers. The PA unemployment tax is largely assessed on the employers as well but in recent years that has been changed to have an employee withholding portion that is only assessed at .08%. That is .0008 on gross wages. Eighty cents on $1000 of gross wages, so technically yes she did 'pay in' but not nearly what you thought. It literally is 'pennies' compared to benefits it provides...

@wiseman...she's paid into the system, and was terminated against her will...pennies or no. Maybe the media should follow up on the real reason for her forced ouster...It wasn't due to a lack or academic results or student performance-smh/politics(sigh)...
