#PhillyFive Developing Stories: May 20, 2015

Your early look at the day's developing stories.

Here's your look at five stories we're following today:

1. Primary results: Former City Councilman James Kenney easily won the Democratic primary in Philadelphia's mayoral race, making him the favorite to become the city's next leader. Meanwhile, on City Council, Kenyatta Johnson and Maria Quinones-Sanchez defeated primary challengers in their contested district races, while two incumbents failed to win Democratic party nominations in the at-large race, losing to three newcomers.

2. High school dropouts: A study being released today finds that more Philadelphia high school students are graduating on time and fewer are dropping out, but some youths -- including black and Hispanic male students and teenage mothers -- are lagging significantly.

3. Positive Train Control: Amtrak has started to put in place safety system called Positive Train Control, which could have helped prevent last week's deadly derailment at Frankford Junction, in Philadelphia, but months of installation and testing work are ahead before it can be used.

4. Hearing in officer's death: A court hearing is scheduled for this morning for Carlton Hipps and Ramone Williams, who are charged in the shooting death of Philadelphia Police Officer Robert Wilson III.

5. Pumping gas in N.J.: There's renewed debate in New Jersey about whether motorists should be able to pump their own gas.
