5 stories to follow: Aug. 1

Welcome to August. Kick off your day -- and the month -- with a quick look at five stories we're following today:

1. Riley Cooper racial slurs: Eagles wide receiver Riley Cooper has apologized after a video of him using a racial slur at a country music concert was posted online. The Eagles have fined Cooper, but some are questioning whether the player should face more consequences. Still, many teammates say they forgive him and others are cautioning a rush to judgment.

2. Sports round-up: In other Philly sports news, it's day 11 of Eagles training camp. The team practices at the NovaCare Complex at 12:30 p.m. The Giants beat the Phillies, 9-2, Wednesday, and the two teams play again today at Citizens Bank Park at 7:05 p.m. Former Phillies closer Brad Lidge will return to the ballpark before tonight's game to officially retire.

3. Another flood watch: A flash flood watch is in effect for the Philadelphia area yet again. More showers and thunderstorms are expected today, which may to lead to flooding in already soaked poor drainage areas and streams swollen from previous downpours.

4. Building collapse hearing: The Philadelphia City Council holds its fourth public hearing on the deadly June 5 building collapse in Center City. The council is slated to hold a total of five hearings on the incident at 22nd and Market streets that killed six people. Today's is expected to focus on demolition best practices.

5. Medical pot in N.J.: A group of advocates for medical marijuana plans to deliver thousands of letters of support for a bill that would make it easier for children with some health conditions to use the drug to Gov. Chris Christie's office today.
