Contract extension for Owls' Dunphy

Temple basketball coach Fran Dunphy has agreed to an 8-year contract, athletic director Bill Bradshaw announced today.

Dunphy's contract now extends through the 2018 season.

(In a busy day at Temple, football coach Al Golden has agreed to a 5-year deal, taking the coach through the 2014 season.)

"We are very pleased to be able to reach new long-term agreements that will keep Fran Dunphy and Al Golden in charge of our two most visible programs," Bradshaw said in a statement.

"There is not a better coach, educator, or person than Fran Dunphy. He represents the best of Temple University, Philadelphia college basketball, and Owls' athletics. As for Al Golden, no other coach has so successfully turned around the culture of a Division I-A football program as he has accomplished at Temple. In the classroom, in the community, and on the football field, the performance of Temple Football has earned national recognition."

Dunphy said in a statement: "I am very thankful for the opportunity to continue to serve as the Temple University men's basketball coach. The past 4 years have been special and my staff and I are already looking forward to the 2010-11 season."

The Owls have won three consecutive Atlantic 10 Tournament championships under Dunphy.
